Passable entertainment coming soon to a video outlet near you and you can wait it was Only hype for the most recent entry in inc night Faure on Elm Street series when i991 s the night Mare asserted that Pixa faced Freddy Krueger was really truly once and for All dead. If you fell for that then you obviously Don t know How Hollywood works. The suits at new line Cinema who hijacked Freddy for a string of five desultory sequels to director Wes Craven s original 1984 chiller would never let such a Cash cow die. The Shock is not that the concept has been resurrected but that the studio had the Good sense to put the franchise Buck in Craven s hands. Not surprisingly the Man responsible for such Low budget Honor classics As the lust House on the left and the Serpent and the a Abc Nyhas come up with a film that is by far the Spoo Kiest and Cleverest of the Nightmare sequels. It s a thrill ride straight to the Center of our subconscious fears. As usual the film features the layers within layers gimmick that makes it difficult to Tell whether the characters on screen in any Given scene Are awake or dreaming. But Craven who wrote directed and co produced takes that concept a step further Here. This time the stars of the original movie play themselves including Heather Langenkamp who played Nancy and John Saxon who played. Her father. Robert Englund appears sans his gruesome Freddy mask As does Craven himself and various new. Line Cinema executives. The Story opens with Langenkamp struggling to put her Nightmare experiences behind her to focus on other act ing projects and raise her Young son Dylan Miko Hughes. As she explains i m not sure about doing horror any More .7. but horror is still pretty sure about doing her. She s been getting phone Calls from a frightfully familiar voice and she and Dylan Are having unsettling dreams. She soon learns that strange things Are also happening to Englund and Craven. Then new line Bossman Bob Shaye reveals that Craven is secretly working on a new night Mare script and he needs Langenkamp to return to he series which Only serves to add to her dread. The explanation the real life Craven Lias dreamed up to explain Freddy s re turn to the big screen is one of such in genious chutzpah that you can t help but chuckle in admiration. As Craven tells it in the film Freddy is actually an ancient malevolent Force the Only Way to keep him at Bay is to confine Hin to a fictional framework like the Nightmare films where he has been trapped for the past decade. But since the series supposedly ended in 1991 with part i Freddy is now push ing into the real world or the real world within the fictional film to be precise. And the Only Way to Stop him keep making More Freddy movies it s a marketing ploy so brazenly outrageous that you Don t even mind its flagrantly manipulative premise. As the actress who played Freddy s chief Nemesis in parts i and Iii Langenkamp has now become a sort of gatekeeper whom the Demon must defeat to make his transition to the real world. The tension builds slowly As the monster tries to use Dylan to get at Langenkamp. At times the pint sized Hughes eerily effective in his role is almost As scary As Freddy. The jittery Climax has Langenkamp and Dylan fac ing Freddy in an imaginatively Kru Gerish version of Dante s inferno. There Are a few bloody scenes but Craven shows admirable restraint in abstaining from the gratuitous slash and splash mayhem that marred other entries in this series. It s a startling comeback for Freddy and for Cra Ven who shows he has t lost his stuff in a sequel that is every bit As Goose bumpy Good As the original
