European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - November 21, 1973, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 12 the stars and stripes wednesday november 21/ 1973 letters to the editor the Uri Aii stars game Art Buchwald i would like to comment on the up coming Uri Safe Allstar football game scheduled for thanksgiving Day. It is certainly a credit to Safe that they have been Able to provide this level of Competition for their All stars. Itis a contest that has received much publicity and rates High in fan interest. Recently it was revealed in the stars and stripes that de Hutt had selected 33 All stars for the initial Safe Camp which was to open the following Mon Day. I could not help but notice that of the 33 chosen 25 were from the Csc football Confer ence. Surely the us deserves a better representation. It May also be of interest to some that out of the 25 Csc All stars 15 were from either wies Baden or Pitburg. None have come from Rhein main or upper Heyford As yet but they will. Pinching i received our sunday 4 nov. Is and had a very unpleasant Surprise our Price going up to 15 a few comments we in tur key Are Seldom mentioned in an of your sports sections. Our Kar Mursel team can beat any of your farm teams in Germany or England and if Given the Chance they will prove it. Then maybe they la get coverage. We have a paper girl who will be very surprised next month when her deliveries de crease. All of your big time coverage is directed toward Ger Many and England. Please give us in Turkey a break. Your younger airmen soldiers in Germany and England should learn to Pinch their pennies As they do Here in Turkey. Then they would t have to fill your saturated column with i have it rough letters. Your rates will most surely be increased again and again be cause i for one will not pay the outrageous Price for such limited coverage. , Walter w. Polk Heidelberg Germany dear stars and gripes Well anyway to me it seems like that should be a Good title. Here s a different Type of letter you May or May not have received before. I Murray d. Krambeer claim to be the first person in Germany or the world for that matter who willingly paid 15 cents for the stars and stripes. I on 8 nov. 1973, paid to mrs. Brown at the stars and stripes in Erlanger 15 cents to be the first Ever to do this feat. Now if you think i wrote this for a reason you re right. I m the sports director at the Aya in or Langen and this letter is a cheap Way to ask the people of Europe to support your Aya. Also if this brought a smile to your face it s made my Day. Murray Krambeer Erlanger Germany pay 20 cents and Well print an other letter de. However i feel that those who have planned this contest have really missed the boat in considering the local fans who follow Safe football. In scheduling this game for the Rhein main Arena they have shown a com plete Lack of regard for the Many thousands of fans who cannot get to Rhein main to watch the game i think this would be the proper time to remind those in charge of the All stars that there Are 9 teams in the Csc not just 3 and furthermore there Are 6 teams in the . Not just 1. All deserve a fair and impartial representation. Later in the week the final . And Csc stats were printed in stars and stripes. Again it was with much interest that i noted the Rushing stats. In the Csc the leading rushers from 1 through 7 were not selected to be All stars. Number 8 was selected. He is from Pitburg. In the ., it was much the same. It would seem that our All stars Are not really All stars but Only Lucky enough to have played on a team that won most of their games. As food for thought just imagine the individual Effort made by those players who were not on winning teams but still managed to rank 1 through 7 in the final Csc statistics. Remember Bob Gray and Carl Rittenhouse Don t these people have the right to be All stars it would seem to me that the yearned it by outperforming their counterparts though in Many cases they were at a consider Able disadvantage. After All they Are playing against the Best teams not the worst. I would Hope that in All fairness these people should be Given the Chance to show what they can do against a College team As Well. To be perfectly fair Many of the players deserved to be selected As they worked hard All year to make it. Unfortunately there Are those who worked just As hard and did not make it and taking their places Are those whose Only claim to Fame was being associated with a winning team. This system of picking the All stars does not represent the vast amount of individual Talent that lies within the Safe foot Ball program. To Many it is be ginning to look like the All Star game against Rhode Island will not Only be a farce but a disaster As Well. I Hope for the prestige of our ballplayers and the Safe football program i am wrong. However if i m right remember i told you football fan. Sembach Germany. Editor s note stripes sports editor Jack Ellis said every coach submitted names from his team. Then the head coaches of Pitburg Wiesbaden and Rhein main selected the Csc players they wanted and the head coaches of upper Heyford selected for the . Confer ence. Reference to Bob Gray and Carl Rittenhouse has coaches puzzled. They Are not playing this year. Some people selected elected not to come and some who came left such As the league leading passer from Torrejon Milt Ket in person either because of the distance they must travel or be cause the Field at Rhein main will not accommodate All of those who desire to see the game. It seems a simple matter that to reach the maximum number of fans the contest should have been scheduled for the Ramstein a Field where live telecast could have been provided by an to. In this Way the game could be viewed by All those interested rather than the Lucky few who live close enough to warrant the Purchase of tickets. I realize that a certain amount of Revenue must be raised to off set the expenses incurred in bringing the Uri football team to Europe. But i believe the morale Benefit received through the live telecast of this football game would offset any loses of Revenue incurred by scheduling the game at Ramstein rather than at Rhein main. Filming of this game for telecast at a later Date May be planned by an to but this is still a far cry from the live telecast that would have been possible if the game had been scheduled for Ramstein. Lawrence Maloney 36 ams Pitburg Germany editor s note the chief of Safe sports Branch pcs personnel he Safe replies concerning the game we expect it to be a Good one and Hope the entire military Community will be Able to come. The game was scheduled at Rhein main primarily because that base has the Best facilities to Host the game in terms of billeting for players stadium capacity and other support facilities. We agree with the writer that live telecast would have been an excellent Way to bring the game to the entire military Community in the an to viewing area and we have been disappointed that an to has not been Able to pro vide live coverage of other Safe games such As was done last year. We considered this service to be Good for the Mili tary Community in general and Good for the Safe sports pro Gram. In the cast of the Turkey bowl game an to does plan to video tape the game which begins at noon and broadcast it the same evening providing technical problems can be worked out. Robert Harlan program director for an said the game will be broadcast live on an radio and televised via video tape later that evening. He pointed out that More people would see the game if shown during prime time than if it were carried live. De rationalizing. And As i said Only the other Day when a Good Friend was unable to keep an appointment with us because of late hour pol duties these Uelish things remind me of Mildred b. And there is a special cell of editorial writers from the washing ton Post new York times and Detroit daily news who make sure the anti Nixon line is adhered to in editorials. . Who puts up the Money for the conspiracy Eberhardt Walter Cronkite pays for most of it out of his own pocket. Our newspapers and television stations might Chip in if we have to Fly to key Biscayne and get the goods on Bebe Rebozo or to . To find out what gives at san Clemente. We also get financing from the Ford foundation the Brookings institution and masters and Johnson. . How did you use water Gate to Embarrass Nixon Eberhardt we made the whole thing up. There is no James Mccord Jeb Magruder John Mitchell Maurice stans or g. Gordon Liddy. We concocted the whole thing. . Including the resignation of Spiro Agnew Eberhardt yup. We take full credit for that one. . Why Agnew he had nothing to do with watergate. Eberhardt i guess we jus got carried away. . What about the presi Dent s tapes Eberhardt we made that up too. It really threw the White House for a Loop. . It s obvious you people Are Well organized. Eberhardt we have to be if we re going to be members of the press. .
