European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - November 21, 1973, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes wednesday november 21, 1973 by Randy Burnett racing Roundup Detroit s car world a few columns ago i mentioned that i d been visiting Detroit and that we would soon have a report on the scene there. The report entitled Detroit s car world. Now and tomorrow will be published next week four sections in All with the first one to appear in tuesday s stars and stripes and the next three on the Days following. It s been a lot of work but much fun too and i Hope you enjoy it. Only a month ago the Detroit experts acknowledged a trend to smaller cars but that was before results of the Arab Israel War were with the arabs cutting off Oil to the United states and the daily talk of Energy crisis i have an idea that the trend to Small cars is no longer a trend. It s probably a Gigantic Rush for gremlins pintos vegas dusters and anything else in that category. As you know the 74 cars won t Start unless you buckle your Seatbelt and that situation has brought a lot of griping even from consumer advocate Ralph Nader who has Long campaigned for safety. Nader recently termed the interlock Seatbelt system Claustrophobic and he fears a safety i feel that Nader has always moved in the right direction but the whole safety bit has gone the usual overkill route and if Nader feels the cars Are Claustrophobic he has Only himself to blame. One of the Many people i thoroughly enjoyed talking to in Detroit was Ford s head of safety web Mcdonald. He gave me a Good example of what Detroit is up against at times. I Don t necessarily sympathize with Detroit but i certainly appreciate the engineers problems. Anyway Mcdonald told me a Good Story involving a time when he appeared before a Senate committee on Auto safety. Once before a Senate hearing a senator asked me this if you can believe it Mcdonald said. He asked if air plane designers can come up with a Landing gear on a 747 to accept All that Load Why Are you Guys having problems designing a bumper to meet the 5 mile an hour crash Law " Mcdonald told the senator look we could design a bumper system to meet almost any Law if the Public would be willing to pay More for the bumper system than for the entire car. The Landing gear on a 747 costs $4 million and it has a stroke of 8-feet when it touches see what we re up against Mcdonald asked me. He had made it quite Clear and from that time on i kept in mind Detroit s problems As far As costs Are concerned. Although american cars Aren t nearly As sophisticated As Europe a you still get a lot of car for the Money. We always must design around the Cost Factor As every Detroit designer put it. Sometimes we tend to forget this. In the stars and stripes series i be tried to cover everything of general interest. A few highlights include All the new cars the sales picture safety clean air and the problems there automobile design now and for the future alternate engines and a Turbine car test drive a test of Ford s new Mustang ii a Nice car by the Way recreational vehicles driving in the United states. A lot of other stuff. Art work and design of the four part series is by Dick Kraham and i think you la enjoy his modern approach. In fact i think you la enjoy the whole thing even though racing in t involved. Fuel hurting motor sport speaking of racing we May All be in trouble. With the Gas situation in Europe the racing scene is a mess at the moment and it could get worse. Wolfgang Rausch former chief editor of Germany s rally racing dropped in the other Day and he feels the situation May get worse before it gets better. Germany has cancelled All motor sport activities a lot of rallies involved until feb. 1 at the earliest Rausch said and what happens in 1974 All depends on the arabs. Hock Venheim s season finale slated for dec. 1-2, has been cancelled. Andre Pilette wrote to say that his driving school at zolder Belgium is out of Luck on sundays and so it goes. The effect of the fuel situation is widespread and Many livelihoods Are involved. One can Only Hope that things will return to Normal by next Spring when the racing gets under Way so keep your fingers crossed. Gas shortage or not the British Are running their famous Rac rally of the forests a world championship round for rally cars and on tuesday Finland s Timo Makinen was out in front in a Ford escort. Lying second was swedish Ace Bjorn Wal Degaard in a Bow 2002. Britain s big Hope Roger Clark Winner of last year s Rac event was running third in a Ford escort. The 2,000-mile rally Origi Nally set for 2,500 Miles had its route shortened because of the fuel crisis. The event ends late wednesday. The British round is the next to last on the world championship rally Calendar with the finale set for Corsica on dec. 1. As the French have no fuel problems the corsican rally will probably be held dec. 1 As scheduled. The press on regardless rally Amer Ica s world championship round was won by Walter Boyce and Doug Woods in a Toyota Corolla. Second were Jim Walker an Terry Palmer in a Volvo and third John Smiskol and Carol Smiskol in a Dat Sun 240z. Old Friend John Buffum who used to Campaign in Europe when he was in service Here he and Steve Behr took 12th in the 1969 Monte Carlo rally finished fourth in the press on regardless aboard a Ford escort. His co Driver was Wayne Zitkus. Standings for the world championship for makes rally after the . Round had Alpine Renault with 132 Points Fiat with 98 and Ford with 50. So after Corsica the title will doubtlessly go to the Tough Little French alpines which started the season with a Victory at Montecarlo and have been going Strong Ever since. Athletes have to work to sup port themselves As Well As train to compete. They Are subsidized in school where they received scholarships he explained. Spitz said right now the olym Pic committee and the aau Amateur athletic Union com Mittee As far As swimmers go Are far removed from what swimmers want. I think the olympic and aau committees should have compe Ting athletes serving on them to represent athletes. I feel a Good proposal is to have an athlete on every committee for every representative who is not an athlete to give equal representation Spitz said. He said such a Compromise will certainly help present and up and coming athletes. I be been a member of the aau for a year. Only once in the past six months have i been called on by my committee to vote and that was to vote on an award to go to another athlete. I have a vote All right but it is not on the rules committee.
