Ueberroth imposed one year suspensions against Joa Quin Andujar Keith Hernandez Dave Parker Lonnie Smith Jeff Leonard Dale Berra and Enos Cabell but said they could continue playing if they donated 10 per cent of their salaries to drug prevention programs agreed to random drug testing for the rest of their careers and performed 100 hours of Community service work in each of the next two years. It s a Good thing they were disciplined third baseman Steve Buechele of the Texas rangers said. Something had to be  Haywood Sullivan co owner of the Boston red sox agreed that penalties were in order and were fairly tempered. Without fear nothing works. Jim Heiring of Colorado Springs colo., set a world indoor Best in the men s two mile walk with a time of 12 05.9. Teresa Vaill of Boston set an american record of 6 53.58 in the women s mile walk. Heike drechsler of East Germany registered the farthest indoor Long jump Ever in the United states 23-103/4. In winning drechsler beat Jackie Joyner who broke her american record in finishing second at 22-10vi. Another outstanding performer was Mike Conley. He won the men s Long jump and triple jump for the second consecutive year the first time since 1969-70, when Norm Tate did it that such a double double had been accomplished. The pole vault expected to be a fierce Duel among Bubka and the top two americans Billy Olson and Joe dial instead turned into a family affair among the bub Kas. Sergei s older brother Vasily finished second at 18 Olson who had set the world indoor Best four times this season failed to Clear a height missing three times at 18 4 /2 after passing the opening height of 18-0 /2. Dial who had set the world indoor Best once in 1986, cleared 18-Ovi on his first try passed at 18-4 a then failed three times at 18-8 /4.
