Henry for putting up with me those fou Days that i trained. " Darius s. Germany likes balanced Auto coverage dear editor having read recently the letters favouring More Nas car coverage Over formula one i feel the need to voice my disagreement with them. As a longtime fan of All types of automobile racing including Lascar indy car formula one and the world endurance championship i would like to compliment the stars and stripes on its balanced Well rounded reporting of the world Auto racing scene. Your Fine coverage of the 1985 grand National sea son coupled with recent reporting of the 86 Daytona 500 and articles on Richard Petty and Junior Johnson Are proof positive that you do not have a Lack of interest in Lascar. If at times it seems that formula one racing is in the news More let s remember that the formula one constructors association Foca puts on racing events in countries around the world including the United states and therefore has a much wider Audi ence than does Lascar which races Only in the . The stars and stripes does a Good Job in balancing its racing coverage. After All if the news department reported Only on events happening in the ., we the readers would find ourselves growing rapidly out of touch with the real world. The stars and stripes and or. Randy Barnett Are to be commended for keeping True racing fans in touch with the real racing world. Keep up the Good work sir. Kevin Arrington Berlin sports letters chides Auto racing critics dear editor in your March 10 Issue of the stars and stripes i read your article on the complaints people had about an s coverage of formula one racing and not enough coverage of american Lascar racing. Well i am a True Follower and believer of All sorts of automobile racing particularly formula one. However Here at Simonella Sicily we do not have any coverage on to other than what s on italian to and not know ing the language does t help. I Don t appreciate or. Scudder s or or. Hughes remarks saying and i quote we Don t need or do we want the amount of coverage you give to formula one they should not express other people s feelings without knowing what those feelings really Are. If these people want More Lascar coverage they should try to be stationed in conus and not in Europe. You can never please people who have everything. Claudia a. Iturriaga Simonella Italy no glory for also rans dear editor i just wanted to voice my opinion and some other local wives on the Squadron intramural basketball games. This season started months ago. I m sure that not Many people knew that even though we All Are a part of some Squadron in a Way. The wives of the he Safe team were there. We were there during the entire season. Watching our husbands bleeding from scratches laughing at the refs for bad Calls sweating As they took that last worn out breath just As other wives of Good Squadron teams. Where was the squad Ron support what happened to the Squadron team the Cheevers the people who work with them and see them almost As much As we the wives after All of this hard playing for an unappreciative Squadron the playoffs came. All of the games were Beautiful and As a wife i would like to say thank god for will Power because these men played like champions. But of course the playoffs Are to decide who the Best Squadron team is. During the week of feb. 24, the he Safe Squadron team played six games. At these games were the same five wives who were there All year. The last game for the championship was with cars. They were a Good team. They won first place. But what about those Guys who came in second and third what about All that Effort that was put into the games to make their Squadron feel proud of having winners not Only workers but winners the first place champions received mugs. Big Deal the second and third got nothing not even a Pat on the Back besides those from their teammates and wives. What happened to miniature trophies or plaques or something what happened to at least a formal thanks from somebody that these Guys had the heart nerve and Energy to go out there and give it All they be got where was a Little sharing the blood sweat laughter and the tears from a Job Well done no matter what place was made Enid . Perry Ramstein Germany in me Morium to up giant7 dear editor Sec. Ponce Vasquez former Coic of Darmstadt sports and a Friend of fast pitch softball players for the past 25 years succumbed to cancer recently Back in his Home state of Texas. Ponce will certainly be missed by the old timers of fast pitch softball. In the Early 60s at fort Bragg and the 70s and 80s Here in Europe Ponce was instrumental in keeping fast pitch competitive. A Small Man of 5-feet-3 inches 150 pounds Ponce had a Way with men to make them winners. Old timers on the european fast pitch softball league scene will always remember this Little giant always competitive and inspirational. After pitching and winning the Usa eur championship game in 1978 at Augsburg s Sheridan Cavern Ponce shared his Victory with everyone to include those who had fallen to his Rise Ball. Well miss you our Friend Comrade and organizer. Maybe the Fields you la be playing on up there won t require the Back breaking Effort you put into them at Darmstadt for the game we All love so much. Thanks Ole buddy. We know there is a position open for you up there. Bill Jeffrey and the fast pitch softball league Frankfurt no crying in Cleveland after cars can Karl Richfield Ohio up so far not Many tears have been shed for George Karl. Most of the Cleveland Cavaliers players would not discuss the Fate of Karl dismissed sunday As the team s head coach after months of Job Hunting and feuding with general manager Harry Weltman. But world b. Free recently benched by Karl pulled no punches. Me and Harry Weltman were the Guys he hates the most said free. Harry gave him the contract i scored him the Points that got him in the playoffs but we were the ones he hated. I did t have a problem. He did. He smiled to my face while stabbing me in the Back. He has t liked me since i played for Philadelphia and he was with san Anto Cleveland Forward Edgar Jones said he did t know Karl had been dismissed. No really asked Jones who is on the injured list. If i m not playing i Don t tend to pay much attention to the newspapers and Gene Littles named As Karl s replace ment on an interim basis discussed his for Mer Boss. Some Guys weren t Happy with George said Littles who has been with the Cava Liers As an assistant coach since 1983. The players were curious wondering suspicious. After All every Day there d be something new in the newspaper about George looking for another Littles said he was closer to the players than Karl was but he added that situation exists on most Aba teams. The Guys tend to go to talk to the assist ant first he said. They d come to me and say is coach going to show up for the game what s the real Story i Don t think it really made a tremendous difference in our on court performance. We Haven t been playing Well All year and now we re going to have to re group and get Tough for the Littles like Many in the Cleveland front office believes Karl will resurface As head coach at the University of Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh officials have offered Karl a 34-year-old native of the Pittsburgh suburb of Penn Hills a five year contract Worth $215,000 per season. Neither Karl nor school officials have offered further comment on the matter but it has been Learned a meeting has been scheduled in Pittsburgh later this week. Karl and Weltman had a string of encounters relating to player personnel on court activities and the fact the coach was trying to Force contract negotiations by publicly seeking other s such a thing As loyalty said Weltman. Matters reached the Point where George s dedication to the Cavaliers a photo George Karl .61-88 record was seriously questioned. A move was inevitable considering Karl 61-88 in his tenure with Cleveland was to hold a press conference tuesday at a Richfield restaurant to Tell his Side of the Story.
