At 20 years he said retirement pay would be computed based on the average of the service members highest five years of base pay. After 25 years it would be computed on the highest four years of base pay and at 30 years on the highest three years of base pay. The plan would use a multiplier of 3.5 percent per year Between 20 and 30 years of service so that after 30 years the serv ice member would still get 75 percent of base pay. The plan Calls for full Cost of living allowance adjustments. The official said the subcommittee plan incorporates parts of two defense depart ment proposals known As the combination and Structure Only options. Congress ordered the Pentagon to draw up the two options last year in an Effort to explore ways to change the military retire ment system which Many on Capitol Hill feel is too generous. Congress Cut $2.9 billion from the fiscal 1986 military retirement budget and was then faced with implementing some kind of Cost saving change to the retirement system or risk losing up to 330,000 service members due to Gramm Rudman spending reduction requirements. The new plan takes a Little bit from both our proposals but it s also got some things that Are in neither of ours the Pentagon official said. The Pentagon options would have Given service members at least 43 percent of their base pay after 20 years of service. Retirement pay now is pegged to the service members final base pay at the time he or she leaves Active duty. A change made several years ago bases retirement pay for anyone entering Active duty in 1980 or later on the average of their highest three years of base pay which slightly decreases the amount of retirement pay compared to the current system. The subcommittee proposal is expected to go before the full House armed services committee for a vote this week. European weather forecast for wednesday morning fog and afternoon Haze for All areas.
