European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 10, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday april 10, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers three years ago i began to collect Hummel figures. The prices ranged from $20 to $50. I owned about 30. Each piece had sentimental significance such As Christmas motherhood Friend ship children Etc. Last year my Hus band Frank became interested in my collection when he Learned that some of the figures had appreciated in value and several models were discontinued. Within the last few months he has brought Home about 80 of the larger figures and 50 smaller ones. Frank claimed he was trying to make me Happy. This is when the fighting began. He has become so obsessed with the potential value of these hummels that it is sickening. I am embarrassed to invite guests to our Home because it looks like a gift shop. Not Only has my husband taken All the Joy out of my Hobby but i be grown to hate every one of those figurines. He spends hours going Over lists noting the Cost of the purchases and their present value. I fear his goal is to buy every hum Mel that was Ever made. Am i being unappreciative or is there something wrong with him former inspired collector dear . Your husband has become obsessed with what used to be your Hobby. Obsessions Are a form of mental illness and difficult to treat. Frank should be in therapy. Mean while encourage him to sell the figures on which he can make a profit. The next letter should be of interest to you. Dear Ann Landers six years ago my husband went nutty Over tropical fish. He bought a 15-gallon tank and spent every spare minute watch ing the fish. When they had babies he was in seventh heaven. His Hobby was a source of great pleas ure and i liked it too. The Only drawback was cleaning the tank but he always did it and it took less than an hour. A year later he decided to get double tanks with connecting tubes so the fish could swim Back and Forth. Everyone who came to the House said the sight of those fish swimming from one tank to the other was one of the most Beautiful sights they d Ever seen. The twin tanks however Are larger and take three hours to clean. At least 20 pans of dishwater must be emptied and put Back in. What s More they must be cleaned every three to four weeks. If we let it go longer the room smells like a sewer. Last year my husband had surgery. The Job of feeding the fish removing the dead ones and cleaning the tanks fell to me. His interest in the fish diminished considerably after his operation but any mention of get Ting rid of the tanks results in a heated argument. I Don t want to be mean but it looks As if i am stuck with a lifetime Job that i hate. I need some Good old Ann Landers advice. Between a Rock and a hard place in Lancaster a. Dear Rock find someone who for reasonable compensation will clean the tanks once a month. A High school student or a retire person might jump at the Opportunity to make a few extra dollars. Pass the word among your neighbors and friends. And Good Luck dear. Aircraft sales to Greece my question is Why Why sell 40 of the world s most advanced aircraft to Greece As a member of the . Air Force stationed in Greece i can t understand Why we support a government that is openly hostile to the United states. Daily i read articles where the greek prime minister Andreas Papandreou or a member of his socialist government has something negative to say about president Reagan or the United states government. Daily i must work under the restrictions placed upon us by this government. Yet we still pour millions of Dol Lars into this country and now we will sell them 40 f-16s. Why in order to boost nato you say. That is a laugh. When was the last time Greece sup ported nato or took part in a nato exer Cise to keep Russia out you say. There Are almost As Many russians Here As americans. Besides that if you were to review a segment of the news program "60 minutes you would hear or. Papandreou openly condone the Downing of a korean Airliner by the russians. In fact he stated that he himself would not hesitate to order the Downing of an unarmed civilian Airliner if it was to stray off course Over Greece. So let s sell him 40 f-16s to make the Job easier. Commissary idea addressed i would like to respond to your recent article five big commissaries face cuts in while i agree that All government serv ices should make appropriate cuts when needed and with salaries the biggest expense it is the direction a commander must turn. My question is directed to col. Ronald Leach air Force commissary service european Region commander. It concerns your statement about the number of line items stocked and Man hours used. You stated that if you Stock six brands of Cut Green Beans and Cut that to four you would spend less time restocking. This is not entirely True. Example if you sell 100 cases each of your six Green Beans per month then you Cut the six Green Beans to four will not the commissary patrons then buy the same amount 600 cases from the remaining four brands so then you Are restocking the same amount which is the same Man hours but with four brands instead of six. I do agree with you when you say an elimination of an item entirely will save Man hours. But if you eliminate an item entirely you eliminate sales of that item. Your commissary patrons will then buy that item at some other location. True you have lowered the Man hours but caused a loss of sales and dissatisfaction among your customers. Would t better training in restocking techniques be a bet Ter solution than elimination of line items name and location withheld editor s note col. Ronald s. Leach commander air Force commis sary service european Region replies thank you for the Opportunity to explain. You Are exactly right that when the number of items is reduced total unit sales would remain generally the same. However training is not necessarily the answer. The labor saving comes in on requisitioning e.g., different National Stock numbers contracts companies Etc inventorying e.g., different Universal product codes and warehouse locations Etc and receiving and warehousing. It is easier and less time consuming to warehouse four items in mass than six items of lesser volume then pricing and Price verification on a larger number of items make the situation More labor intensive. However rest assured we do not have any plans to eliminate categories of items entirely. It is our policy to Stock the Best Selling National name brands As Well As a Price line if at All possible. Now let s talk terrorism. Or. Papandreou openly embraces Libya and its Leader Moa mar khad Afy. The greek govt rent is currently building an anti aircraft system for Libya. How Many acts of International terrorism have originated from Greece How Many acts of terrorism have ties to Libya or have been branded As acts of hero ism by khad Afy is not or. Papandreou s support of Kha Day a vote of support for killing women and children name withheld hell Nikon a Greece editor s note Mary m. Tracy second Secretary . Embassy Athens Greece replies the decision to sell the f-16s to Greece reflects our continuing commitment to sup port the defense efforts of our fellow nato members. Although it has not participated in nato exercises in recent years because of the omission of the greek Island of Limos from exercises Greece is a full member of nato with important responsibilities for the de sense of the Southern flank of the Alliance. It participates in and supports Many essential nato programs. While there Are issues on which the . Government differs with the government of Greece we continue to cooperate in some very important areas. For example in 1983 the two governments signed a defense and economic cooperation agreement that authorizes the United states to continue to maintain and operate four major bases and several smaller installations on greek soil. The St ars and tripe Sec Stu of no tired of other people s trash now that the temperatures Are climbing and the Snow has melted you can easily see that the . Government housing areas have been neglected Over the Winter months. It seems As though Many people Don t care what the areas look like. There is one area that is always extremely filthy the dumpster area. Almost every Day i take trash from my apartment outside to the dumpsters. In Stead of putting just my one bag into the dumpster i also end up throwing three or four other bags in. There is always at least one bag of trash within the dumpster area that is not in a can. It s there because someone who was on his Way to catch the bus just dropped the bag Over the Fence he obviously did not want to walk the extra 10 paces necessary to put his bag in the can. Another contributing Factor to the depos it of trash on the ground within the dump Ster area is that Many parents will have their 5 to 10-year-Olds take the trash out. These children can hardly carry the bag much less open the dumpster. If they Man age to open the top they la have big prob powwow this month an Indian powwow will be conducted on april 26 at the boy scout Center in Benjamin Franklin Village near Mannheim Germany. The event will Start at 2 . And end at 10 30 . The powwow will feature Indian dancing and the Many feathers native american drum Lindbergh Namingha head Singer hopi. Native americans from several tribes attend these events. This will be a Good time powwow. Overnight sleeping accommodations Are available but bring your own sleeping gear. Realizing this the children place their bag on the ground in front of the dumpster. This brings us to other people who Are taking their garbage out to the dumpster. They will get to the area and see a bag on the ground in front of a dumpster then they la assume that All of the cans Are full Why else would there be a bag of trash on the ground and place their bag next to the children s bag of trash. Then during the Middle of the night while everyone is asleep the bags will multiply faster than rabbits. They la have Many children before the Light of Day. Early the next morning before Many people Are awake i am out once again Clearing the Way to the dumpsters. All of this trash is very discouraging and it seems As though very few care. Many people who live in the apartments feel their responsibility ends at their apartment front door. If the same people living in these stairwell apartments lived in duplexes or Row houses the garbage areas would not look like they do. Each family would easily be Able to see their responsibilities and keep their areas clean. Staff sgt. Donald p. Petersen Berlin pen pals i would like pen pals from other countries. I am 25 years old.
