European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 10, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Big screen 2 Patty Duke played an american teen Ager and her look alike British Cousin on the Patty Duke show in the 1960s. Technology advances for scenes needing twins by Mark Schwed United press International if Only Patty Duke had it so Good. In the Patty Duke show an Abc sitcom that ran from 1963 to 1966, Duke played two roles that of an american teen Ager and of her look alike British Cousin. But television has come a Long Way since Duke was out there bopping with the boys. Today we have the gemini process. Simply put the gemini process is state of the Art technology that allows two images to interact in one scene. In the Duke Days when the two cousins would be in the same scene it was accomplished through split screen filming. Duke would stay on one Side of the screen As Patty then she would change costumes and play the other Side As the Cousin. Through editing the two characters would seem to be in the same room at the same time. Sometimes a double would be used but Only for Over the shoulder shots with Only one face visible. But the gemini process makes split screen obsolete. The newfangled technology got its first use on network television in the murder mystery killer in the Mirror. I get to slap myself hug myself they do it with computers and this Odd looking Little Rod said Ann Jillian starring in the dual role of twin Sisters whose rivalry for the love of one Man leads to murder. The first order of business is to find a double. No acting experience required. The double is chosen strictly for height and the look of her body she must match with Jillian. Then it sounds a Little sadistic but a plastic Collar is wrapped around the double s neck and hooked to the Rod. They need to have the torsos totally still. They superimpose your face your hands your legs whatever they need onto a photo double who was there As my stand in. So that s Why they need to have us completely still. It s very difficult. Have you Ever tried moving your head when somebody s got a hold on your neck the result is quite amazing. It lets the audience see the actor or actress who s playing the twin actually have physical Contact with the other. It s a first. It s a Little hairy. The first time you try it you have to get your feet wet first. Then it became a Little easier. Then you remember of yeah i m supposed to remember the line. What s great is it does t jump out at you like some special effects. There s no loss of dimension. It s so real you get caught up in the Story. Holy cow wait a minute did 1 just see what 1 saw u is not the first time Jillian has had to mesh her acting with to technology. In the Short lived network series Jennifer slept Here Jillian played a ghost. I got to do Chroma key Jillian said referring to electronic superimposition of objects a technique seen mostly on news programs. I jumped inside of pianos and inside of complicating her role in killer in the Mirror is the fact that not Only did she play twins but she played one twin imitating the other twin. We interchange actual identities throughout the movie she said. When they interchange identities they Don t do As Well As the original one. Consequently i be created four characters because they re different. I be got to Tell you. One of the other things that is a Little different when you re doing twins is that acting is reacting. Usually when there s dialogue going Between two people each person has something to react to. I had someone Reading off the Side who was not an actress attempting to try and get my timing with besides being strapped up working with a double and a non actor voice off stage there was one More Gizmo Jillian had to Deal with. She was wired. They would record me As one sister put it on and play it Back to me through a Little earphone when i was playing the other sister. There were a lot of technicalities there. When you look at it for the first time you think How on Earth am i going to do this. But you do All these special effects and gizmos May break new ground for Jillian. I May turn out to be the special effects Queen she said. April 10,1986 stripes Magazine 17
