European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 18, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers suggestions offered on overseas living i have served More than 16 years in the service with three Long overseas Tours in Germany and Italy and one Short tour in Korea. I have had the Opportunity to serve in leadership and non leadership positions to observe too Many times the problems with individual soldiers and family members stationed overseas. Too Many times dependent wives isolate them selves from reality and lock themselves up in their quarters or snack bars on Post and prefer to do excessive gossiping about neighbouring families hurting not Only their neighbors friends and Community but also creating problems for themselves. Solution break out of your Little closed in locked up closet of a world. There is More to talk about than other families and their problems. Too Many times dependent wives have complained about Host nation workers taking jobs away from military dependents who want to work but can not. And then when they do get a Job and they must work with a co worker who happens to be a Host nation worker they resent working and communicating with that worker even though there is no language Barrier. Solution Host nation workers Are hired under an agreement Between the United states and the Host nation. That is a fact and it is not the Host nation workers fault. So Don t take it out on them. Try communicating and working As co workers Are sup posed to work. Bridge that negative Gap of an attitude instead of spreading it. Too Many times soldiers and dependents Are seen outside the bases sitting in bars restaurants or on the Street wearing extreme clothes and carrying blasting stereo sets wherever they go. Solution we Are visitors Here overseas not Perma nent residents. Try not to Wear dirty torn or loud clothes or take your music boxes to local established ments. Nobody is asking you to change your Ameri can ways for the Host nation you Are temporarily stationed in just show proper decency and respect for others. Too Many times i have heard dependent wives and children make outspoken impolite re Marks and complaints about the Host nation people and their country. This is the Start of a disease Lead ing to prejudice. It appears to Start at the Soldier and spread to his family normally due to a previous problem or misunderstanding with the Host nation living area. Solution keep your comments at least to yourself and wife and Don t make them within hearing Dis Tance of your children. Talking and spreading this Type of language about a Host nation and its people is extremely damaging to us As americans. And finally too Many times service members and their dependents complain and cry about High deposits on off Post quarters. Solution the High Cost of deposits is not just be cause of the Exchange rate. It is also because of pre Vious tenants who did careless damage and did not pay their Bills before leaving. Over the years Many of us left with the attitude i m leaving let the next Guy worry about this is the reason Host nation land lords mistrust us when it comes to renting and depos its. We damaged our own credibility and i am not sure it will Ever recover unless we pay the Price. Wake up people Stop putting All the blame on the Host nation. If we can t live with our friends now what is it going to be like in the future sgt. 1st class Richard f. Tscherne Vicenza Italy writer concerned about abandoned pets a subject that i would like to touch on is animal abandonment. Within the past several months there have been quite a lot of cats and dogs which have been abandoned because the owners no longer want them or can t afford to ship them Back Home when they leave. Seems to me people enjoy having pets for their Chil Dren because the Little Kitten is so adorable and cuddly or that Puppy looks so cute that you just have to have it. Along with having to have that Kitten or Puppy also comes the responsibility of taking care of it. The Only thing a pet requires is a Home food and lots of love and affection. By this time the animal has grown up with you and come to love its owners is used to its Safe and caring environment. But then comes moving time and you Don t have sufficient funds to ship the pet. Now what to do with the animal. You be tried finding it another Home but no one seems to want a pet. So before you know it the animal is being abandoned. Now this cuddly Kitten or cute Puppy which is now grown roams around the housing area looking for food by crawling through dumpsters. With Luck they la always find food. But what happens if the animal gets run Over whose responsibility is it then to have the animal removed guess whoever wants to take the initiative which usually no one really wants to assume. How much Effort does it really take to go to a local animal shelter German Stierheim or to the Post veterinary clinic and leave the animal for them to find another Home that would be the humane thing to do for both yourself and the animal. This Way you know that your pet is being cared for and will most probably find a new Home instead of roaming around the housing area to fend for itself which most House pets Are not accustomed to doing. Please give it a Good thought before taking that cuddly Kitten or that cute Puppy into your Home. Think about what your responsibility is towards the animal. Maybe then there won t be so Many stray animals wandering around. Name withheld Stuttgart West Germany pen pals i would like to write to people in other coun via mar Sta. Talking during class. Making noise. Running in the hallways. Getting out of place in line. Wearing improper clothing. In the 1980s, teachers must contend with students who Are Strung out on alcohol and drugs. Pregnant girls. Suicidal students. Threats of rape and murder. Stealing. Assault. Guns and knives in the classroom. Arson and bombing. Scary in t it yet teachers Are leaving the profession because of Low pay Lack of cooperation from parents and the tendency to blame the schools for All the ills of society. I am not a teacher nor do i have children of my own but i pay school and other taxes willingly because i know if the children in our Community Don t get a decent education we will not have competent doctors lawyers service people and yes teachers in the next decade. Good teachers Cost Money and we should consider their salary increases an investment in the future. Thanks for getting the word out Ann. A.k.s., Texas dear Texas Derek Bok the president of Harvard said if you think education is expensive try i cannot emphasize too strongly the importance of upgrading the Quality of education in this country. The japanese the russians and the chinese know the value of education and we Are losing out to them in a big Way. You get what you pay for in the school system like everywhere else. If we want top notch teachers we must make the Field attractive to them. This Means salaries that Are competitive with business and Industry and pumping up professional Pride. I know of no better in vestment in the future. We dare not risk putting this country in the hands of a Bunch of dummies 20 years Down the Road. Wake up out there dear Ann Landers in a recent column you said you should have told him to teed it to Sweeney " i have been a Sweeney for 63 years and have never heard that expression before. Is it something new what does it mean if a Sweeney does t know you can be sure a lot of other people in your Reading audience Are going to be asking you this question As Well. How about it Ann James , Farmington Hills Mich. Dear Friend in Farmington feed it to Sweeney Means your Story is ridiculous. I Don t buy i am not sure where this originated but i do remember the line from an old play spoken by a woman who wanted her spouse to know his Alibi was t cutting it.
