Not that there s much to enjoy. Mclnerney shot to Fame with his slim Book and is now a fixture in people Magazine Riding the Crest of a new wave known As Yuppie lit. But his work is As shallow As a y person s soul. It s Safe to say that Faulkner Hemingway and the other big guns of american writing Don t have much to worry about. Since Mclnerney also penned this screenplay the film suffers from the same Lack of depth As the Book. Fox is Jamie Conway an aspiring writer naturally who pays the Bills by working in the department of factual verification fora Magazine that is suspiciously similar to the new yorker. Jamie has problems. His Model wife Phoebe Gate who is even shallower than he has dumped him. He is haunted by the recent slow death of his Mother from cancer. And he has this fixation with blow which is making him rather erratic at work much to the displeasure of his Prim dragon lady Boss. Then there s his buddy Tad Allagash Kiefer Sutherland whose Only goal in life is to find a few More lines do you have a Mirror i can lick. He insists on dragging Jamie into the heart of the night where there Are dances to be danced drugs to be hovered and women to be  and we get dragged along on this bum ride until Jamie ends up staring at himself in a Mirror blood running out of his nose. Are we expected to sympathize with this Jerk it does t help that when Fox is supposed to look ravaged from the effects of booze drugs and late nights he can t manage to be anything worse than cherubic a coked out Beaver Cleaver. Despite some impressive supporting work from Jason Robards Diane Wiest and Swo Osie Kurtz director Jeff Bridges can t pull it together. He should have c entered the Story on Tad Allagash.
