European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 18, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Pitburg s Harp dancing to a winning beat Dwayne Harp really had to choreograph a touchdown dance. The Pitburg flanker was scoring at such a scorching Pace his ids threatened to become monotonous. Nine touchdowns in 1984. Thirteen in 1985. Ten in 1986. Twelve in 1987. That s 44 ads in four years. No one in Safe football crossed the goal line with such continuity. But Monotony Dwayne Harp dashes that idea As fast As he runs. He introduced the Harp throb last year. An end zone Celebration of Pelvic gyration. The National football league would Harp All Over the Harp throb. The Continental sports conference did t know what to do. Its fans did they cheered. I try to make things fun says Harp. As he Speaks Harp sits in empty stands beside Pitburg s empty football Field. Last november he danced on that turf As Pitburg rocked to the Safe championship. Come sept. 3, the place will shake again. So will Harp. He has a new dance for 1988. It la be something different promises a secretive Harp. A featured the Dwayne event. That s just the dance. Wait until you see the touchdowns. Streaks Down the sidelines. Dashes up the Middle. Breakaway punt returns. This Man promises unprecedented Harp Oon thrusts into enemy territory. So does his coach. Hell be everywhere he can running the Ball catching the Ball says Pitburg Boss Joe Green. I want 60 Points by mid season from him. Heck he s got 18 Harp scored three touchdowns in last month s exhibition against Mildenhall. Pitburg won 39-20. It was Harp s show and Harp s alone after four years of running in the Shadow of tailback Freddie Miller. Miller says he s finished with football. He says he will watch from the stands and train for More Power lifting titles. Life after Freddie will be rough says Harp. He s such a Leader. You follow wherever he wants to go. When you say Csc you say Freddie and yet no More Miller time Means More Harp time. The Man with the dance threatens to prance past the Csc record of 51 receptions which Ramstein s Anthony Carter set last year. Harp started his Csc career As a running Back. His show opened aug. 18, 1984, in an exhibition at Raf upper Heyford England. By the time the curtain fell Harp had three ads on runs of 2, 53 and 62 Yards. He also had a 55-Yard punt return. Harp kept running in the regular season. He finished fourth in Csc Rushing third in scoring and first in punt returns. In Pitburg s loss to Ramstein in the Csc title game Harp scored the Barons Only to on a 35-Yard catch. Then came 1985. Harp s glory year. He amassed 1,163 Yards on Rushing receiving punt returns and Kickoff returns. His 15 ads led the league. In one of the finest performances in Safe history Harp caught to bombs of 47 and 69 Yards and rushed for scores covering 54 and 22 Yards As Pitburg buried Ramstein 54-7. When he has the Chance to perform he produces says Bill Schultz who head coached the rams on that memorable Harp Day. Schultz ranks Harp among the top five talents he witnessed in the 1980s the others were Miller Ramstein s Marlon Brown and Rick Hayden and Hahn s Darrell Dykes. Harp praises Dave Lockwood for helping him thrive in 85. That was Lockwood s last year As Pitburg s coach before he took Over Span Dahlem in 87, and he split the tailback time Between Harp and Miller. Safe football 88 a i. A. V Dwayne Harp and son Andre Are a Happy team especially after dad 21 helped Pitburg sink Span Dahlem in the 1987 Csc semifinals. That was the Best situation recalls Harp. By the time Freddie and fullback Ernie Johnson had worked them Over in the first Quarter i would come in and i was off to the Harp thought he was racing for a to in the Csc semifinals. But Hahn s Greg Manora got hold of his ankle and it broke. With no Harp for nearly three quarters Pitburg lost 14-13, dashing a season in which the Barons won eight straight by an average of 44-3. In my four years Here we be been in three championship games. In the one year we did t make it i say that was our Best team says Harp. It was one of the Best Ever to put pads on Over Here. That Hurt like a knife to have a team of that Caliper look Harp helped Pitburg Bounce Back in 1986. His 68 Points led the league in scoring again. Playing in his first Safe title game he carried the Barons to two late touchdowns but they lost 29-22 at Chicksands. After Harp s Rescue Mission at tailback in that loss in England he rarely played that position in 1987. Besides returning kickoffs and punts he stuck to flanker. His yardage dropped although he scored 12 touchdowns. His 9-Yard to catch opened the scoring in the Safe final and Pitburg beat Lakenheath 29-2 for the first title of the Miller Harp Era. Then came the catch. Returning to England for the All Star game Harp found his Csc team trailing 16-14 with three minutes left. His old Ramstein Nemesis Jeff Wilson was at quarterback. He had already hit Harp for a to in the first half. The dream connection clicked again. Wilson spotted Harp in the end zone. So did . Safety Ulysses White. When White and the Ball hit Harp at once the 5-foot-10, 1 78-Pound flanker with All the Flash proved he could take a crash. He held on. The to gave the Csc a 20-1 6 Victory. I tried to kill him says White now coaching Chicksands secondary while he prepares to rotate. I just wanted to make him drop it but he did t. He s a Good receiver. Usually when i hit a receiver he either drops it or does t play anymore. Harp s says Harp i Felt that hit. But for a receiver when you get a hand on the Ball you re expected to hold Dwayne s big says Lockwood who witnessed the catch As coach of the Csc All stars. Dwayne can make the difference. He does for Pitburg what Willie Lawson of Span Dahlem does for Harp 26, has been big on the football Field a Long time. He played in the same Backfield with future Minnesota Viking Ted Brown at t. Wingate Andrews High school in High Point . The team won a state title in 1977. I lamp graduated in 78. He played that fall at Western Carolina then quit because of bad grades. In 1981 he joined the air Force. Seven years later he s a Buck sergeant with a Fiancee two sons and Fields of friends. He s the most reliable Friend i be had says Dennis i Luston a linebacker three years at Pitburg before moving to Sembach this month. I be been trying to kick the Heck out of him the last three years. Hopefully i will this if not Dwayne Harp will have the last dance. August 18, 1988 stripes Magazine 13
