European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 18, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Safe football 83 1987 record 4-6, third in . S National division. Record in the 80s 16-21-2. Top returnee Bill Bozman safety. Top newcomer Terence Carter linebacker. Key to 88 coaching stability. Greenham common has a new nickname crusaders. It has a new uniform color Green. It has a new football Field. What it does t have is a new coach. Randy Garibay returns after leading Greenham to two victories at the close of 1987. Now All Garibay has to do is last. Dick Madden quit in Midstream 86. Jessie Mccoy quit in Midstream 87. It would help if Greenham won. Its record the last two years was 7-13, a confusing fall since winning a division title in its first year of football in 1984. Garibay plans to win. He s the Only army coach in Safe football. He s from the los Angeles area. He played some guard at Utah state. This is a confident Man. Here s How Garibay reacted to his crusaders 28-0 exhibition loss to Lakenheath two weeks ago 1. Maj. Jimmy Barber beat the hell out of the . Army today. He won the Battle but not the 2. I m not a loser. I m a Winner. I be never lost in my life. This team will take the personality of 3. Our defense will punish anybody who will try to run the Garibay coordinates that defense. He s ecstatic Over a new linebacker Terence Carter. He s crazy about a returning safety Bill Bozman. Carter goes by t.c., not to be confused with tic. He skipped the exhibition with a bad ankle and the Boz Man started and the crusaders looked anything but punishing. They surrendered 274 Yards. Their offence looked worse. How much worse was it worse than in 1987, when Greenham averaged 8.9 Points per game. In the aug. 6 game the crusaders managed to 1. Gain a measly one first Down in the first half. 2. Average 0.8 Yard per Rush. At least Greenham s punters Greg Mccormick and Mark Edwards overcame Low snaps to average 37.1 Yards per kick. And Madden the assistant head coach who runs the offence could Point out that Star receiver Juan Lewis sat out with a Hurt ankle. Even when Lewis returns who can deliver the Ball to him Harold Fischer Bill Baker and Jeff Outlar combined to misfire on 16 of 25 passes plus throw three interceptions in the exhibition. That does t seem to faze Lewis who said we re winning it All this year. The Only problem is no billeting for the Safe Greenham gets a kick from Greg Mccormick. 1987 record 3-6, seventh in Csc. Record in the 80s 32-43. Top returnee Charlie Harris tailback. Top newcomer eve Foster fullback. Key to 88 Quick finish. The Wei Brincken warriors remember 1987 painfully Well. These perennial losers won big in the exhibition season. They went 2-0 in the regular season. Then five straight losses and a fired coach. What a mess. We have to remember what went wrong says Charlie Harris the All Star tailback whose 1,003 Yards ranked third in Csc Rushing. The veterans had a lot to do with said safety Joe Frederick last year we had Talent. This year we have to make sure we have a second wind so we Don t lose late in games. By second wind i mean keep our Heads in the game put Points on the Board the whole after Vern Miller s sad fall after such summer Hope Wei Brincken played musical coaches. Bill Gauntt coached the last two games of 87. De Klima took Over in the Winter then quit. Now fran Hendricks sees How Long he can take this. Hendricks looks More like a Maestro at Wolf trap than a master of the counter trap. He s a tall handsome Captain from Mansfield state in Pennsylvania. Hendricks helped Mansfield s football coaches As a student assistant. He was defensive coordinator at Clark a in the Philippines in 1980. In 1987, he witnessed Wei Brincken s crash Landing from the stands. Now he s on the sideline. We re talented but maybe not As talented As last year said Hendricks. I m not using that As a Crutch. If we re not As talented we have ways to overcome that believing in each the warriors better believe they must improve from exhibition losses to Oesterberg and Rhein main. At least venerable de Venable returns at quarterback with Harris and fullback eve Foster behind him. That gives Wei Brincken one of the Best Backfield on the continent. Who s going to give them room to run Only the right Side of last year s line guard Kevin Biggs and tackle Steve Rosenfield returns. Then again Foster offers to sacrifice his muscular body for Harris. I Don t mind blocking for him said Foster just in from Korea. He s real linebackers Rich Beckett Jesse Johnson and Tony Horton give the defense muscle. Maybe they can give Hendricks a birthday present in the opener at Ramstein. The coach turns 32 saturday. I1 5. 1987 record 2-8, last in . S National division. Record in the 80s 5-25. Top returnee Mike Phillips linebacker fullback. Top newcomer Greg beavers quarterback. Key to 88 passing offence. To find Raf Fairford you drive past a Little British town called Lechlade and pull out a Compass. Funny that s How the Falcons offence has worked since they joined the . Sports conference in 1985. Things look different in 1988. For one Falcon players Are Able to find their Way to practice. For two their expansion team excuses Are Over. No no no said new coach Mitch Fryer Over whether a 4-year-old team is destined to lose. We have All new Guys this year. And they re hungry for what pizza Fryer can handle that he s manager of the Fairford Piz a parlor. Hungry for wins Fryer a retired master sergeant from grand Junction pizza Man Mitch Fryer peppers his Fairford Falcons. Tenn., admits he had no taste of head coaching before being the Only one to apply for the Job. Fryer does offer Hank Harmon As offensive coordinator. Harmon offers i 5 years of . Experience. And Fairford offers players. Last year 18 Guys might make it to a game. At practice they barely had enough fora racquetball match. Now 35 players regularly attend practice. The Talent includes Mike Phillips most valuable defensive player in the 87 All Star game and Chip Chaney. Phillips Forte is playing linebacker. Chaney is a cornerback. That s Good news but not great. The Falcons annually display Fine defense. To win they need offence. Introducing quarterback Greg beavers and wide receiver Bill Thomas. With beavers Arm and Thomas Speed defensive secondaries better look out said offensive line coach Manny Audain. Audain plans to protect beavers with a line that includes Eric Okonski and Charles Rogers at the tackles. If the Falcons leave it to beavers maybe they can change their base s name to Goodford.
