European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - January 12, 1989, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes Page 11 dear Ann Landers May i comment on the letter from the Mother of the 11-year-old obese child with the rash betwee her thighs she was furious with the doctor s nurse who said the Trou ble with this child k that she is too both my Mother and my sister were grossly obese. When mom died at 46, she weighed at least 450 pounds. My sister weighed 160 Jet pounds when she was 6 years old. She now weighs at least 400 pounds. Many specialists have said there is no medical reason for my sister s obesity. Perhaps i did t end up obese because my sister used treat most of my meals. Mom catered to her because Sis could never run or play like other children. Kids can be cruel so mom overcompensated. Sis is now a very unpleasant adult. In the last two year she has broken three chairs to my Dinette set. We be had Many arguments because she sneaks food from my cup boards and eats out of the pots on the stove. Parents who stuff their children so they grow up so fat that they can t live Normal lives should be charged with child abuse. The nurse in that doctor s office is right. The Mother who wrote refuses to face her daughter s real prob Lem. Pray that she will before it gets bigger than just a m talking about heart disease High blood pressure and Early death not to mention everyday nuisances such a difficulty buying clothes and shoes fitting into desks at schools theater seats and so on. Ohio sister dear Ohio i agree with you although Many readers did not thrones who were critical of the nurse All were mothers of overweight children. It figures. I Hope your letter will get them to rethink this Issue for their children s Sake. Dear Ann Landers you once wrote drive As though everyone else on the Road is a maniac or i see your Point but let s face it. We live in an automobile dominated world. Frighten ing the hell out of the Driver won t help. You see them every Day up tight people hunched up with the White knuckled grasp that the instructor taught them. They Are so tense that the veins on their forehead stand out and their eyes bulge. Good Drivers should be relaxed yet Alert ready for an unexpected move by another Driver. Please remember that driving is not a social occasion. When you drive shut up. And shut up the children your friends and the dog. Big packages belong in the trunk Don t talk on the phone or try to drink a cup of Coffee or eat a cinnamon Roll while driving in heavy traffic. With a bit of Luck and common sense you la get from Here to there alive. Sign me 40,000 mile without an Accident and mostly on the Dan Ryan expressway Chicago dear Dan i wish everyone on the Dan Ryan expressway drove like you. Ditto for the san Diego freeway and the new Jersey Turnpike. Thanks for the Wise counsel. Dear Ann Landers a stranger approached me at the supermarket today and said triplets How can you stand it and the walked off. Every time i go out with my three Well be have children someone makes an uncalled for comment such As my god i sure feel sorry for you or you have my sympathy it bums me up. How should i respond to these insensitive Rock headed fools i need to express my outrage but i Don t want to upset my Darling youngsters. Sandra la Grange by. Dear Sandra the Best response is a Broad smile and a positive com ment such As these Are wonderful children. We feel bless-ed.1 Mission of an television is explained __.9_.a _ can t something be done to elevate the intellectual level of an television i am not suggesting a High brow pcs format but just something worthwhile to watch without an having to stoop to the lowest denominator. I am very grateful that an is available in Europe and it goes a Long Way to alleviate homesickness but i believe there is room for improvement. Of the movie shown every week very rarely is one of any Good Quality. It just seems like More schlock miniseries or pathetic soap opera like Romance movies. Does t an have any Good old or recent movies they could show after All the soap operas Are shown during the Day. Why can t we have something of better Quality in the evening what angers me to no end is the profusion of sport programs every weekend. At the end of a Long week one wants to relax and watch some Nice , All one can find is endless football games. That s Fine once in a while but Friday saturday an sunday nights just about everyone Here has a video casette recorder. Show the games at a different time let the sports fanatics tape them watch them at their Leisure and leave the airways free for Good program for the rest of us. Instead All the interesting news programs Are on inthe Middle of the night or Early morning. It s just not fair. After everything that has been said about the educational Levels of americans Why can t an take the Lead and do something about it through its Grams Why must an Cater to americans intellectual laziness and spoon feed them More of the Gar Bage being shown Back Home Dimitri Gontscharow bad Godesberg West Germany editor s note Tom Baxter chief television operations he an Europe replies an s programs Are supplied by the armed forces radio and television service arts the depart ment of defense Agency charged to provide a representative Sample of stateside radio and television Grams to overseas military networks. Our Mission tasking is not specifically designed to increase viewer education Levels but rather to provide news information and entertainment. Arts uses the Nielsen ratings to procure Grams that have demonstrated the highest popularity with american viewers. An does not program based on personal preference or similar non objective meth ods. An s sports policy is to broadcast one prime time game saturday one prime time game sunday and overnight sports whenever it is offered by arts. An maintains a balance Between family program Ming and sports coverage to meet the needs of our diverse audience which must share our single Channe programming service. The programs you find to be schlock miniseries or pathetic soap opera like Romance movies Are often among the highest rated . Programs. An s View ers Are As eager to see these programs As stateside audiences Are. Not everyone has a Var. We cannot and will not establish a schedule on the Assumption that All viewers have one. But even if they did an cannot justify delaying live sports in favor of other programs. Such an action would ruin the value of the sporting event and make poor use of the multimillion Dollar invest ment that the defense department has made to vide live satellite television capability to the worldwide arts system. Your letter seems to indicate that you own a Var. Rather than ask everyone else to record programs of proven popularity so that you can see something other than the lowest denominator May i suggest that you tape the interesting programs from the Middle of the night so you can watch them at your convenience. An is Here to inform and to entertain the widest possible Dod audience. There is a balance that Al lows this goal to be met most efficiently. We seek to maintain that programming balance.
