As a devoted horror film fan a Ever since the Day my parents took me to see night of the living dead when i was but a wee lad a it s saddening for me to witness the Long slide of the genre into the corny gratuitous muck of such fare As the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street series. The first Power starring Lou Diamond Phillips does nothing to reverse that slide and in fact hastens it along. Although it has a few very few scary moments this is one Long cliche with bad acting and ridiculous dialogue to Boot. Phillips is Russ Logan a los Angeles homicide detective who has gained notoriety by bringing Down three serial killers in the past few years. As the film opens he s dogging another nut Case dubbed the Pentagram killer because when the police overlay the locations of his murders on City maps they form the shape of the five pointed figure. That is but the first of numerous occult touches to come and each one is dumber than the last. Logan finally manages to Snag the killer who turns out to be City employee Patrick Channing Jeff Kober. But when Channing goes to the Gas chamber it s Only the beginning. Apparently he s a hard Core Devil worshipper bestowed by Beelzebub with the gift of immortality and the ability to Transfer his soul into any living body he comes across. He can also appear in his original Guise of Channing. Logan bumbles around . Trying to figure out a Way to put an end to Channing for Good. He enlists the Aid of professional psychic Tess Seaton Tracy Griffith who is mentally attuned to Channing s Aura. But the duo can t make any headway until they Call upon a nun Elizabeth Arlen who unlocks the secret of battling this Devil s agent. But by the time that happens you won t care. There Are so Many things wrong with this film that it would take All Day to list them but just to skim the Low Points Phillips is totally unconvincing in his role. He smokes he swears he sneers but he still looks like he a barely old enough to drive much less be a homicide detective. And Griffith causes unintentional laughs with the Way she reads her lines such As when Tess tells Logan that Channing Quot in t a Man anymore a he s a Force Quot Kober plays his part in the same sort of zen coma that he used for his character on television s China Beach. He tries to be menacing but just does t make it. And his catch phrase to Logan each time he escapes the detective s clutches a Quot see a around buddy boy Quot a sounds stupider each time he utters it. The ending is As moronic As any you la Ever see and what s worse it leaves open the definite possibility of a sequel. Maybe we ought to get some Devil worshippers to do a number on the people who keep putting out such cinematic drivel.
