European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 3, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Future and past Are in the stars Charles Osgood Tribune Media service Early in this Century an american astronomer peered through his Telescope made some notes compared his observations with others and arrived at a startling conclusion. The universe was expanding. If that was True it gave Rise to other cosmic questions. How Long had this been going on did it All Start in one immense explosion a big bang great astronomers get objects in space named after them. Hailey had to Settle for a Comet. That american astronomer who found out that the universe is expanding has something in space named after him now. His name was Edwin p. Hubble. It May not be the greatest thing since 7-up. It May not be the greatest thing since sliced bread. But any astronomer will Tell you that the Hubble Telescope is the greatest thing since 1609, when a fellow named Galileo first pointed his eyepiece toward the stars. In some 30 years of covering science stories in be never seen scientists As excited As the astronomers Are now. No wonder. Who like to have a $2.5 billion toy like this one to play with who cares if the Cost is astronomical you think that bothers astronomers up to now the Way you placed a High powered Telescope was to get it up on a Mountain Peak somewhere a Wilson or a Palomar to get it As High As possible above the Clouds the fog the smog and the Schmutz in the air. The Best you could Hope for was to install the couple of Miles above sea level. Hubble is now in a High orbit Well above Earth a atmosphere. Its As if we found a new Mountain 381 Miles High. And then on the tip of that 2 million foot Mountain they be installed this 43-foot Telescope with a 94.5-Inch finely polished Mirror. And when i say finely polished i mean a surface so smooth that there a not As much As a Millionth of an Inch deviation. Much has been made of the fact that with the Hubble Telescope Well be Able to look not Only out into the far reaches of space but also Back into time. You have looked Back into time too. All the stars we see twinkling overhead Are so far away that the Light we Are seeing even though it is travelling at lights blinding Speed it not tonight slight at All. It is Light that left there years ago. That is the past we Are looking at. So Over the next 15 years with the Hubble Telescope if All goes according to plan astronomers will be Able to see almost All the Way Back into time to see More and learn More than they have in All the centuries up to now. Here is a prediction. You can hold me to it. I say that at the end of the 15 years astronomers will have answered Many of the questions that have haunted them for years. But they will also have Many More questions that up to now they Haven to even thought kidding years for countries to double in population4 Italy ?1,155 United kingdom a 301 Japan ?175 years United states a 92 soviet Union a 80 China a 49 Iran a 20 Kenya ?18 a based on current annual growth rate source population reference Burea who declined Lincoln a invitation to Ford theater son Robert Lincoln Gen.
