European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - June 3, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday june 3,1990 the stars and stripes a a a Page 7german a Ray Observatory put into orbit Cape canaveral a. Apr with the hobbled space shuttle Columbia standing silent 10 Miles away the National aeronautics and space administration launched an unmanned rocket Friday with an Observatory aboard that will search through space for sources of a rays. The Delta rocket blasted into a partly Cloudy sky at 5 47 . Edt and the $273 million West German Observatory called Rosa was boosted 43 minutes later into an orbit 360 Miles High. Ground controllers were unable to immediately confirm that the spacecraft had separated from the Booster because of a Brief loss of radio Contact. However they later picked up a Strong radio signal that indicated the satellite had separated and was safely in orbit. A a it a the finest a Ray Telescope that a Ever been flown a Nasa program scientist Alan n. Bunner said. A was our instruments improve it always opens the door to Rosa originally was to have been taken into space aboard a scheduled shuttle Mission in 1987, but was redesigned to fit into a Delta Booster after the 1986 challenger disaster moved its launch priority Back to the mid-1990s. A you can imagine How eager we Are that we now get the thing off the ground a said Joachim Truemper Rosa program scientist for West Germany a Federal ministry for research and technology. A the appetite of the science Community to do a Ray observations is very very Large a Truemper said. About 1,000 sources of cosmic a rays Are known to exist. Astronomers Hope Many of the sources will be identified by Rosa As it orbits High above Earth a atmosphere which blocks a rays and makes them invisible from the ground. A this will be the fodder that scientists will use for years to come to identify Quot a a x new. A Delta ii rocket lifts off from Cape canaveral Friday carrying the Rosa satellite. A targets for future study a Bunner said at a news briefing thursday. The satellite consists of a powerful a Ray Telescope and a wide Field camera capable of detecting extreme ultraviolet Light. After two months of instrument calibration Rosa will begin a six month Survey of celestial bodies that Emit a rays. It will be the first full sky Survey by an imaging a Ray Telescope. Following the Survey the Observatory will spend the next year or More making detailed observations of extremely hot stars Black holes and remnants of supernovas hot Clouds produced by exploding stars at the end of their lives. Information will be transmitted to a ground station near Munich West Germany and then sent for analysis to centers in that country the United states and Britain. Although other spacecraft have probed cosmic a rays none has provided the degree of Resolution or sensitivity of which Rosa is capable space officials said. Rosa is 100 times More sensitive than the Best a Ray Observatory to Date the so called Einstein Observatory which was placed into orbit in 1978, Bunner said. And it will complement the work of the a Ray Telescope that is part of the Astro Observatory waiting to be launched from Columbia. The Astro Mission has been delayed until mid june possibly longer. Columbian a scheduled launch on wednesday was scrubbed because of a fuel leak that Nasa workers have not been Able to find. Nasa is picking up the $63 million Cost of the Mcdonnell Douglas Delta 11 rocket and related launch expenses. The United states also has contributed $18 million toward the $273 million Cost of Rosa and Britain has chipped in $35 licensed As real estate appraiser owner cleared Providence . Apr Toby Wasny to qualified to be a certified real estate appraiser but the cats owner be punished for getting him a License a Federal judge ruled Friday. . District judge Ernest c. Torres dismissed a lawsuit by the National association of real estate appraisers claiming that Toby a owner Roy c. Schaeffer made the organization look foolish by admitting a cat As an appraiser. Torres said the association did not prove its Contention that it was defrauded and defamed when Toby a listed on his appraiser certification and in court documents As Tobias f. For feline Schaeffer a was admitted. There was no question that Schaeffer had submitted a false although incomplete application in the cats name Torres said. But it was True that the cat had been granted a professional designation which was All that Schaeffer claimed. A a there a no evidence that anyone understood or reasonably could have understood that or. Schaeffer. Said that plaintiffs knowingly admitted cats a Torres said. A the plaintiff has failed to prove that the statements in question were false and hence the claim for defamation is although there were muffled giggles throughout two Days of testimony both sides said the issues were significant. The association and its owner Robert g. Johnson claimed Schaeffer made the organization the laughingstock of the Industry when he publicized his cats membership. Schaeffer claimed the integrity of his Industry was at stake. He said he submitted his cats name for membership in the National association of real estate appraisers to prove his Contention that it did not have High professional standards. He successfully used the incident to press can Gress to approve a National registration and licensing system for appraisers. The associations attorney Michael Dady had asked Torres to Rule against Schaeffer on the grounds that any National organization could be duped into admitting unqualified people. A if we had to verify everything in this country the whole system would shut Down a Dady argued in court thursday. Torres said Friday that argument had no weight. The judge said a seemingly elementary Steps a such As asking Rhode Island members of the association about Tobias f. Schaeffer or requiring a completed appraisal from him could have avoided the incident. Vaccine protects chimpanzees from aids virus san Francisco apr a vaccine As been developed that protected chimpanzees from the virus that causes aids in humans a biotechnology company announced Friday. Officials of Gene tech inc., the South Yan Francisco company that sponsored the research warned against premature optimism of a of the vaccine which they Hope to begin testing on humans this summer. We have fairly High Hopes for this out it will take years to develop anything int could protect humans from aids a min Murphy Gene tech spokes Parr is it right now is More of a Sci breakthrough.?1116111 certainly not a in the Experiment two chimpanzees immunized with the experimental vaccine and then injected with the his virus remained healthy six months afterwards. An a vaccinated Chimp became infected within seven weeks the researchers said. The . Food and drug administration must approve the vaccine for testing on humans before further research can begin Gene tech said. The Gene tech vaccine is among several being developed in Hopes of finding a Way to protect people from contracting acquired immune deficiency syndrome Fyk i in Lvi a immune ii Tam americans have died from aids since it was first reported in the Early 1980s. Vaccines done to cure a disease but prevent those who have been vaccinated from becoming infected. The Gene tech vaccine is genetically engineered As Are two other vaccines that have been approved by the Fra for human testing in people infected with the human immunodeficiency virus or his the virus that causes aids. One of the vaccines approved for testing in August 1987, was developed by Micro genesys inc. Of West Haven Conn. The second developed by Bristol Myers Squibb co., of new York was approved for human trials in november 1987. Or. Jonas Salk who developed a vaccine for polio also is testing an experimental vaccine made from inactivated aids viruses that Are replicated and done to contain anything that could be infectious. A the hardest part about developing these vaccines is they re very specific and work against Only one Type of virus a Murphy said. Eventually he said a vaccine must be developed that protects against All strains of the disease. Phillip w. Berman of Gene tech and Jorg Eichberg of the Southwest biomedical research Center of san Antonio Texas developed the Gene tech vaccine for chimpanzees that were housed in Texas during the Experiment. The research is to be published in the British medical journal nature. Gene tech got permission from the journal to announce the findings Early so it could be reported at the company a upcoming annual shareholders meeting
