It v /10vies a reviews fire Birds rated pg-13, the new movie about the daring hotshots who Fly the army s ah-64 Apache gunship is dizzying fun when it gets into the air with expert Aerial photography that offers a Fine sense of the capabilities of these mechanical marvels. But when the movie focuses on its human characters the effect is something like a chopper that loses its rotors in mid flight. In other words it s top gun for the army set and we re not talking similarity we re talking Carbon copy. Just about every plot element in top gun is misappropriated by scriptwriters Nick Thiel and Paul Edwards who give director David Green precious Little to work with. Since the rus skies Arentt the bad Guys anymore this movie is like the army itself a in search of a Mission. The Only one convenient at the moment is the drug War so it s a Cartel in an Anonymous but apparently Friendly South american country that gets to feel the Brunt of . Military superiority this time. The army forms a special Apache task Force to go in and wipe out the drug lords who seem to have the latest in top of the line Jet fighters at their disposal not to mention some pretty nifty chopper pilots of their own. Leading the Apache Force Are Nicolas Cage As Jake Preston an ah-64 Pilot and Sean Young As Billie Lee Guthrie who flies a scout helicopter. But before they can deploy the pilots must go through a training course run by Brad Little Tommy Lee Jones. Its one of the Many absurdities of this script that the opening scenes show Jake in a Flashback sequence on a previous Mission in South America which would Lead you to believe he a already fully qualified for ah-64 duty which in turn makes you wonder Why he has to go through this rigorous training process. In any event the task Force deploys and eventually gets to fight the bad Guys after a Surprise attack in which the forces of evil carpet bomb the ah-64 base and manage to hit Only one Apache and in a not giving away anything when i Tell you that the Good old . Of a. Triumphs once again. Jones manages to strike some believable chords As the aging Ace who finds it hard to accept that his Mission now is to teach the tricks to the next wave of Young turks. But generally the characters Are wafer thin and you can easily see Thiel and Edwards straining to come up with enough material to fill out the scenes on the ground. They did t Strain hard enough. The exchanges Between Jake and Billie Lee who apparently had a Brief thing before her desire to Fly choppers ran counter to his neanderthal notion that women should stay Home and have babies Are especially weird. At one Point Jake slugs another Guy in a bar and she shouts Quot in a not a piece of Steak for you two to fight Over Quot us right.
