European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 26, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday August 26, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 a editor s note Ann Landers is on vacation. The following column is one of her favourites. She will be Back sept. 2. Dear Ann Landers i m a Young woman who is in and out of elevators at least two dozen times a Day. I deliver Den Tal materials from the lab. A certain fellow in this building also rides the elevators a lot. I Don t think he is delivering anything. Think he just likes elevators. I have never spoken to this Guy but i be come close to slapping him a couple of times. His idea of run is to snap a woman s panty Hose when her arms Are loaded and she can t defend herself. I Don t want to make a scene but i d like to put this creep in his place. Any suggestions Arlene dear Arlene a go on and make a scene a real Good la Only have to do it once and hell never pull that stunt again at least not on Ann Landers i just read the letter from the Young Mother whose children Are driving her crazy. Maybe i can help. My kids nearly drove me crazy too. It was the paediatrician who saved my sanity. One Day when i complained he asked Are you a Don t Mother do you Tell your children Don t write on the Wall Don t touch the plants Don t jump on the sofa i had to admit the answer was yes. He said Stop telling them what not to do and Start telling them what they should for example Here Johnny write on this piece of paper. Come on Johnny let s go outside and see How High you can jump. Look at these blocks Johnny let s see How Many of them you can stack up before the Tower Falls in other words give the child a Challenge and offer Himan Opportunity to show you what he can do instead of telling him what he can t do. I tried it Ann and it worked wonders. My children Are a lot easier to get along with now and i m a Calm mom dear mom a Calm mom usually Means Calm kids. Your Pedi Atri Cian gave you an important key to child rearing. Thanks for giving me the Opportunity to share it with Ann Landers in your column on the dangers of being fat i was hop ing that you would say something about what happens to grossly overweight people when they need surgery. I am a registered nurse and i can Tell you that surgeons read operating on fat people. Sometimes there is so much excessive flesh that it nearly doubles the time of a abdominal operation. This can be dangerous. Also it is next to impossible for the nurses and the aides to turn these people in bed. Yesterday it took five of us to give a 300-Pound woman a Back rub fourth turn her and one to do the massaging. I know fat people Don t think about these thing when they reach for that third slice of bread or that second piece of chocolate fudge cake but perhaps after Reading this they might. Tired tired my medical consultants Tell me that lean surgical patients recover about 35 percent faster than fat patients. And childbearing for a fat woman Means added risks. These facts May not curb anybody s appetite but they Are certainly Worth thinking about. I appreciate your taking the time to write. Creators Syndicate justification for smoke Breaks discussed i am writing to you today regarding a subject that have not seen addressed in your column before. I am a supervisor. Each Day i see hundreds of taxpayers Dol Lars going up in what i am referring to is the air Force policy or Lack of a policy on smoking. Each Day at our unit both military end civilian employees spend five to 10 minutes each hour on our Back porch having a smoke two of the peo ple participating work directly for me. This is impacting spoke with each of them about this excessive time on smoke they in turn asked me what is the policy two smoke Breaks four five Sixa Day or what they also said it in t fair to them As smokers that our building is smoke free when the could be working at their desks and have a cigarette. A couple of years ago our base like Many others went to a smoke free work this meant that those employees both military and civilian who smoke now had to do it outside. The problem is that there is no set policy on How Many smoke Breaks the Yare allowed during the work Day and How Long Are these Breaks to be. When this problem first arose i asked the com manding officer of our unit for his policy. He had no specific policy just to use my own judgment. I contacted my local civilian personnel office and they said that civilian employees Are authorized a 1-Hourlunch period and two 15-minute Breaks each Day. I asked if the break time could be broken up into 5-minute increments. The answer was i was t satisfied with the answer because the break period they were referring to still did not address smoking and whatever the policy is it must apply equitably tooth my military and civilian employees. I then contacted the office of our Wing commander to ask if head issued a policy for our base. They said there is no such still have not found the answer so 1 am asking you docs Safe have a policy what Are the other supervisors commanders doing about this there must be a policy that will apply across the Board. My nonsmoker has asked if she can have a no smoke break for 10 minutes each houi1. As a supervisor want to be fair and apply the Rule to All of my employees fairly. Name withheld Raf upper Heyford England editor s note Doug Moore Deputy chief Media relations division office of Public affairs he Safe replies conscientious supervisors and the writer of this letter is apparently in that category often have difficulty in balancing the rights of smokers and nonsmokers. It s a highly emotional Issue. However the department of defense s anti smok ing policy is designed to eliminate tobacco dependency. It will Lead to More healthy productive lives for smokers and nonsmokers alike. S therefore giving employees who smoke a 5-10 min Ute break every hour to indulge in their habit might be considered ambiguous both in terms of health handwork production. Allowing All employees a Brief break during slow periods is a morale Booster that is Good supervisory practice scheduling or permitting Breaks to the Detri ment of production should be a following that Fine line in Between is a Challenge but successful supervisors do it. I Hope this philosophy gives the writer a better understanding of the purpose of the anti smoking pro Gram and the need to treat subordinates equally especially in terms of a healthy work environment and Brief Breaks from their duties. Media blamed for Panama invasion leak i be been holding something in for the past seven months and i just have to let off some steam. This morning on the an news i heard that a transcript Ofa Telephone Call from a Marine to his Mother is proof of How Panama was tipped off to the invasion. My husband was involved in that invasion and knew on . 18 that he was leaving for Panama. How did i find out by watching the news on to. On .18 the Fayetteville n.c., area newscasters swarmed All Over fort Bragg and Pope fab trying to get proof that we were going to invade Panama. They never got that proof until . 20, but that did t Stop the reporter from making guesses and opinions on All their news telecasts. By . 19 the National news had picked up the Story including can. I found out after my husband came Home that can is telecast in Panama and that Many panamanians including the general had satellite dishes. How hard could it have been for Noriega to find out that America was invading All he had to do was watch the evening news. What has me steamed is that in All these months i Veseen Washington Point a Finger at different causes for the leak but that Finger has never been pointed at the Media. While i m sure those people would never do any thing to Hurt our country in their private lives their jobs seem to Lead them to disregard loyalty civic duty and patriotism. Our government had Good reason for keeping that invasion secret the people did not Havethe right to know not when the people included those of other countries. In All these months i be heard Only Gen. Carl St incr say anything about the Media almost giving everything away in a quest for when will Washington say something officially to these people Vincen a m.
