European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 9, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday september 9, 1990 the stars and stripes Page 11 a a Jujj dear Ann Landers we Are hearing a lot these Days about film censorship and the various ramifications As motion picture artists Are attempting to tame Down their films to avoid an a rating. In a concerned however with something More important than the dreaded a because i believe it is much More harmful to the youth of America. I am referring to the a a re rating which Means no one under 17 is admitted unless accompanied by a Parent or guardian. I am not an advocate of censorship and i applaud most of what the film Industry is doing to protect Young people. I am deeply concerned however about the poor judgment of parents and guardians who take children under 17 to see films they have no business seeing. I just returned from a very Good action horror film by a distinguished director. It was rated a a re and justifiably so. Several scenes were extremely violent and there were a great Many bloody episodes. When the lights went on i was upset by the number of children in the audience. I wondered what on Earth they were doing there. Ann some of these children were 8 or 10 years of age. Most of us Are tired of Reading and hearing about the mind rot of our youth and the increase in violence and sexual activity among the Young but i can to help but feel that the seeds for a lot of the trouble grew in untidy gardens overlooked by irresponsible parents and guardians. A Well they did no to learn this at Home a we hear the sorrowful moms and pops say so often. Well maybe not but How about on saturday nights when you took them to the movies a Robert Hyde Dallas dear or. Hyde the worst byproduct of horror movies is that they desensitize children to violence and it no longer bothers them. We Are seeing an increase in teen age homicides suicides and violent gang warfare. In my opinion there is a definite connection. Dear Ann Landers when i read All those responses from women complaining because their husbands done to pay any attention to them i knew i had to speak my piece. In a Trade places with you ladies. Id be Happy to take your cold fish if you will take my hot tamale. I am married to a Man who is obsessed with sex and makes my life hell. I am 40. My husband is 55. He wakes me up in the Middle of the night. It makes no difference to him that i have to get my rest so i can go to work in the morning. When i am at Home he follows me around constantly leering grabbing pinching. It never dawns on him that i May not be in the mood or that i might have a problem on my mind. Nothing matters to him but getting it on. We have had dozens of arguments Over this. In order for me to keep up with him i would have to quit my Job and stay in bed All Day and rest. My life is hell because of his selfishness. I used to be warm and responsive in bed. Now i am just Plain worn out and turned off. I would appreciate any suggestions you might have because in my pooped in Phoenix dear pooped in Phoenix Are you sure you Arentt being turned off for other reasons also it sounds As if your husband is using sex to control you. I suggest counselling to find out what made the relationship go sour. Meanwhile How about separate bedrooms with a door that locks creators Syndicate a specialist defends right not to like army i am writing this letter in response to a writers comments about today slower enlisted soldiers. This writer mentioned that soldiers today show nothing but disrespect to cos. Let me Start off by saying that in order for someone to get respect you have to give respect. I personally feel that cos who make their soldiers feel like the lowest form of life deserves nothing but a Swift kick in the butt. On the other hand an no who shows his troops that he cares about what goes on in their lives and gives them a Little respect deserves respect in return. What i mean by showing that the no cares is for that no to sit Down and help an individual with a problem or by listening to what that individual has to say. A person should not have to feel threatened by saying what son his or her mind. I know a lot of people who have a lot of things to say but Are afraid. They feel that if they let it Loose then they will have action taken against them. No one should have to feel this Way. A person should be Able to say what he or she feels. Another comment the writer made was a if an no tells a Soldier to jump they should not ask Why but instead How High and then do give me a break. If you honestly feel this Way and if i Ever become an no i am going to ask you to jump from a Cliff and you better say a How much of a running Start would you like me to take a if you done to then i am going to recommend you for an article 15. Do you see where i am coming from if an no tells me to do something and i done to think its right then you can forget it. In a not doing it. Lets get one thing out in the open those of us who talk bad about the army and show a bad attitude toward the military have our reasons. And we sure As Heck done to want to be classified As soldiers. Believe me we did no to just Wake up one morning with this attitude. We acquired it Over a period of time. Done to get me wrong there Are cos in the army who deserve the respect you re talking about. I will respect an no and i will do what he or she asks me to do As Long As it is a logical command and the no treats me As a human being because i am a human being not an animal. I know there Are a lot of people in the military who feel As i do. We do not take Pride in our jobs and we do not take Pride in the military. The main reason for this is the military has done nothing for us. You can say that the army is giving me $25,000 for College. With the hell i put up with they should double it. I am not saying you Are wrong for liking the army but done to Tell us we Are poor individuals for feeling the Way we do. If you Are willing to let a person or persons run your life the Way they want then i feel for you. I can to imagine doing that because i believe in doing what i feel should be done. I will not let someone run my life for me and 1 certainly wont let anyone in this world dictate to me. A spec. Scott Walker Heidelberg West Germany a profanity turns off this Reader quickly i detest profanity and yet it seems to have become commonplace language everywhere i go. I recently went to the theater with my 7-year-old son. There were three soldiers sitting behind us talking loudly using All kinds of vulgarity not about their girlfriends but about their wives they had no consideration for the children or other people sitting around them. I can to always get up and move away from people who swear a like yesterday when i went to the commissary and two women were swearing up a storm. Every other word that poured out of their Mouths was a swear word. I think they were trying to outdo each other. I wanted to cover my songs ears but avoided them in the aisles instead. Then just around the Comer a husband and wife were arguing Over some spices and swearing about it it seems i cannot get away from it. If you re used to profanity at Home or in the workplace you done to know what it reels like to hear it used or have to read it on a to shirt or bumper sticker. Well let me Tell you it makes my heart ache. I done to appreciate people dumping their garbage in my ears i know of a Soldier who was forced to swear at work although he had never used foul language before in his life. Not knowing what to do about it he complied with the order but vowed never to take it into his Home. What would the founder of our country think of us today George Washington disapproved of swearing. The following is a quote from the Book a facts about the presidents a pages 9-10. A a general order issued aug. 3, 1776, by general George Washington from his Headquarters at new York stated the general is sorry to be informed that the foolish and wicked practice of profane cursing and swearing a vice heretofore Little known in an american army is growing into fashion. He Hopes the officers will by example As Well As influence Endeavor to Check it and that both they and the men will reflect that we can have Little Hope of the Blessing of heaven on our arms if we insult it by our impiety and Folly. Added to this it is a vice so mean and Low without any temptation that every Man of sense and character detests and despises i know it is a hard habit to break but please if nothing else people should try not to swear in Public or in the presence of children.
