Jesse Jackson is on the District of Columbia ballot for the symbolic office of a Shadow senator a his first bid for an office other than president. Voters in the nation s capital also will choose candidates in the race to succeed Marion Barry As the City a mayor. Also going to the polls on the busiest Day of the primary season Are voters in Connecticut Maryland new York Rhode Island Utah and Wisconsin. Only four states a Massachusetts Washington Hawaii and Louisiana a have yet to hold primaries. Runoffs Are scheduled to Settle contests in Oklahoma and Florida. Lowell Weicker is running As an Independent and leading in the polls in the race for governor of Connecticut. Rep. John Rowland already has the Republican nomination for governor while rep. Bruce Morrison and state legislator Bill Cibes Are competing for the democratic nomination. Gov. William of Neill a Democrat is retiring. Washington . In the District of Columbia Barry is running As an Independent for a seat on the City Council where he served before being elected mayor in 1978. Barry was convicted last month on a Misdemeanour charge of Possession of cocaine. City Council members John Ray Charlene draw Jarvis and David Clarke congressional Delegate Walter Fauntroy and lawyer Sharon Pratt Dixon Are the democratic contenders to succeed Barry. Former police chief Maurice Turner is unopposed for the Republican nomination for mayor. Jackson who moved to Washington from Chicago a year ago and considered entering the race for mayor is one of four democrats seeking nomination to become one of two Shadow senators whose Job would be to lobby Congress to make the City the 51st state.
