European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 10, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 t monday september 10,1990 9 writer relates thoughts from a dream late last night i succumbed to temptation and dug a leftover piece of Pepperoni pizza out of the Back of the refrigerator. Unlike criminal Justice intestinal Justice was Swift. I paid the Price for my transgression that very night when i slipped into a vivid dream fuelled by the mixture of Tomato sauce Mozzarella and Pepperoni. In my dream i lived in a world on the Doorstep of War Over the control of Oil resources where there was unemployment in my country automobile companies were closing their doors having lost their customers to foreign Competition. Defense contractors too were feeling the Pinch. Curtailed government spending was forcing them to let go of highly skilled designers and engineers. To further Darken this gloomy picture the environment was rapidly deteriorating in the Wake of continued burning of Fossil fuels. The portion of pizza i ingested was apparently not Large enough to bring these elements to a completely nightmarish Climax. Just when things looked their worst a solution unrealistic As it was materialized. Our president brushed special interests aside and appointed three teams each consisting of a major aerospace defense contractor and an automobile manufacturer. These teams were to work independently under government research and development contracts to design an automobile powered by a readily available Energy source whose use would not be detrimental to the environment. The team designing the winning vehicle would share a Large Cash Bonus award. As can Only happen in a dream a spirit of Competition grew betwee i these teams which represented the Best scientific and technical minds available. I remember thinking that designing a non gasoline powered automobile would be a piece of cake to such Talent. After All these same men put probes into deep space sent men to the Moon designed planes which can outrun their own sound Waves and developed materials which Are invisible to radar. The government has put out multimillion for the in a writing this letter to let those men and women who have loved ones in the Middle East know they re not alone. The recent invasion in Panama a just cause a gave me a taste of what you re now going through. My husband was one of the first to deploy when president Bush gave the go ahead. If you be never been there you re totally out of touch with what these family members Are experiencing. My heart Sank every time the phone rang. When someone came to my door in uniform i immediately looked at their rank. I put Call waiting on my line the same Day he left thanks to the cooperation of Pacific Bell. I have teen agers and did no to want to take a Chance on missing his phone Call. My husband and i were still celebrating the birth of our second daughter in june. He was called to serve his country on . 18, a week before Christmas. I went to pick him up for lunch As usual and he went Home to pack. I did no to see him again until feb. 12. Every time a casualty was announced i shivered cried and prayed he was Safe. I know that a not a lot of Consolation but under these kind of circumstances you do what you feel is Best for you. I Stop a just cause so i decided a just cause Wasny to going to Stop me either. Sad As it May seem All you can do is support others european edition col. Gene e. Here was something a president could Point to with Pride. Here was something for the Little Guy and for All future generations. The history books would be generous indeed with their Praise of such a president. My dream continued and the former defense contractors began rehiring their designers and engineers. Technicians too were needed by the thousands to build the test models. Finally the Competition was Over and one team emerged the Victor. Only one team won but Why was everyone cheering i was informed in my dream that this new vehicle would free Mankind from the strangling chains forged by the greedy few who had grabbed control of our planets Petroleum resources. The american car makers had an instant backlog. Orders poured in from All Over the country and the world. Thousands of jobs materialized overnight. New factories sprung up across America incorporating the latest automation and Quality control which would put and keep our car manufacturers ahead of the Competition for years. Gasoline stations everywhere converted to servicing the new wonder vehicles and took Down their signs with the changeable gasoline prices and replaced them with invitations Reading a drive in for service with a the Middle East was no longer in the newspaper headlines or on the evening television newscast. In fact we never heard too much More about that part of the world. As the alarm clock next to my bed Tore into my dream i recall a momentary glimpse of a newspaper headline Reading a scientists see environment Well let my experience be a lesson to you. If you re going to indulge in nocturnal gastronomic gambling be prepared to experience silly impractical unrealistic scenarios in your dreams. A Anthony j. The meetings might seem Boring because every question will not be answered the Way you a like it to be but remember everything can to be divulged. Its a matter of Security for them and your loved ones. seem evasive at times. They re not ignoring you or your feelings. There Are just some things that can to be answered by a yes or a no. To go into detail would take up time that other questions just As important could be answered. My husbands company sometimes had a phone system set up at the support meetings. You might not get to talk to your spouse but to hear a Safe familiar voice was a lot better than nothing at All. They might have seen or talked to your loved one somewhere. These meetings Are set up for you. Legal matters personal matters financial matters will All get attended to. There Are persons set up during times like this especially to help you. All you have to do is ask. My husband made it Back Safe thank god and we re now stationed in Germany. Just remember no matter How bad it seems or How despondent you get at times you re not alone. Dear Ann Landers i am not planning to commit suicide or anything like that even though i am Only 17 and my situation seems hopeless. I have nine Brothers and Sisters All younger. The four after me Are boys so in a the one who has to help my Mother with the laundry and housework and the younger kids. Mom had twins when i was 12 and everything got worse after that. I mind the work so much but my father makes me stay Home from school when mom Isnit feeling Well. This is happening More and More. I made very Good grades until last year when mom had another baby just 10 months after the previous one. Last semester when i won a special award1 in science my teacher encouraged me to try for a College scholarship. Now she says i might not graduate because i have missed so much school. I can to catch up because i have so much work to do around the House that by the time in a finished in a too tired to study. Mom just told me that she is going to have another baby in about five months. When i said i thought she was having too Many babies she became angry and said a god gives people Only As Many babies As they can take care of. Done to Ever say such a terrible thing again a last night i told my father i want to get my grades up and go to College. He said it would be impossible even with a scholarship because my Mother needs my help. In the Middle of our conversation the principal of our school who is a nun called to talk to my parents about my being absent so much. I was hoping she would convince them that they should let me go to College but that a not what happened. She sided with them and said god has Given me important work to do at Home. She also said Many people have Good lives without going to College. I done to want to criticize my parents. They work hard and try to do the right thing. My father has two jobs and spends a lot of time at Church. But he wants me to Promise to stay Home and help for nine More years until my twin Sisters will be 14. I done to want to make that Promise. Do you think i am being selfish Ann my parents say if i go to College i will be deserting the family and that would be a sin. Is there any Hope for me please done to use my name. If my father knew i was writing to you he would be very angry. A no City no state dear Friend i have so Many things to say i done to know where to begin. Let me Start by saying the notion that god gives people Only As Many babies As they can take care of is nonsense. There Are a tremendous number of babies born to people who cannot take care of them. Your four younger Brothers have eight hands among them. They should be pitching in and helping with the housework and the younger children. The concept that Domestic chores Are for females Only is outmoded foolishness. A the nun who sided with your parents did you a grave injustice. Ill bet she went to College she should know that you will be a much greater help to your parents if you obtain a College diploma and get out into the business world. I urge you to go for it and done to feel guilty Honey. . Your father might consider spending less time in Church and More time at Home helping out. He could offer up his chores As a prayer. In a sure god would accept it. And you can Tell him i said so.
