European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - November 4, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday november 4,1990 the stars and stripes f Leann Landers dear readers every now and then i am Able to touch the lives of the people who write to me and make a difference. I confess it is enormously rewarding. In late september a Reader wrote a i visited the Vietnam memorial in Washington ., and was shocked to discover that John Murray Martin had been listed As Mia missing in action until 1979. His plane was shot Down on nov. 20, 1967. The Pilot who was with him was my sweetheart James bad Fey. He was Lucky enough to bail out., a Jim wrote his brother that night a capt. Martin never had a Chance. I am heartsick. I can to Stop thinking about John and Tina and their five kids. They will probably list him As missing in action but there is no doubt in my mind about what actually a i know that Jim was planning to talk to Tina when he came Home but unfortunately he was killed March 27, 1968, so that conversation never took place. It makes me sick that the Martin family has lived with doubts All these years. I would like to find them and give them Jim a letter. It also describes what a hero John was in the last moments of his life. A please Ann help me find Tina Patricia or Kathleen Martin. John Martin was born in Pittsburgh and they later moved to Dover Del. I have tried without Success to locate them through Friend find Agency air Force locator and Omega task Force an Mia pow organization. Thanks Ann. Lynda Paffrath san Mateo Calif. I received this letter shortly after that column appeared. It came from Lynda Paffrath dear Ann i am having a great Deal of trouble writing this because it is impossible to express the depth of my feelings. My letter that appeared in your column on sept. 27 was read by every member of the Martin family and by the end of the Day i had talked with John Martins sister and his three Brothers who Are still living in the Pittsburgh area. I also spoke with Johns widow Tina who has remarried and is living in Turkey. Johns son and daughter in Law Are also there and i spoke with them. John or. Is in the air Force. I heard from Johns four daughters who Are living in Delaware Nebraska North Dakota and new Mexico. The oldest daughter Cindy repeated what i had heard from All the Martin children a i thought dad might still be alive All these years and even though it hurts to hear the truth its a Relief. We now have some All Johns siblings and children expressed gratitude for finally hearing what happened to him and i must say i was not quite prepared for the outpouring of love and appreciation that i have received from All of them. I am now looking at a Beautiful bouquet of Flowers on my dining room table a gift from John Martins Brothers and sister. Somehow Ann saying a thank you does no to seem adequate but i can to find any other words to express my profound appreciation for what you have done. I now eel that something truly Good has come out of what i lad perceived to be a terrible tragedy. This experience Las been one i shall cherish forever and i am enormous a grateful to you. Sincerely yours Lynda Paffrath san Mateo Calif. So there you have it folks. Is this a storybook ending or what my warm thanks to the editors and publishers who made this possible. Creators Syndicate a Reader decries slowness of pullout Page 11letters with German unification the Absurdity of the Large american military presence in Germany and Europe is obvious. Despite this our withdrawal of forces is nothing More than a trickle. While we can sympathize with the expense germans will endure modernizing former East Germany our own expenses Here continue at Well Over $100 billion a year 60 percent of defense budget. Our deployment to saudi Arabia has almost entirely been made with forces. This Only further underscores the Money and manpower wasted with our Large european deployment. Valuable and shrinking defense dollars continue to be taken away from developing the sea lift and naval capabilities most needed for conflicts such As in saudi Arabia. I done to think too Many serious military planners worry much about the a russian threat any More. Conservative estimates state months would be required for them to mobilize an invading Force. We just demonstrated in saudi Arabia How quickly we could mobilize and deploy a defending Force if necessary. Unfortunately during our Long presence Here in Europe we have created our own monster a ranging from governments dependent on us to military contractors and High ranking officers and civilian employees All with vested interests. Many military career paths have crossed through and blossomed in Europe. I do not wish to deny or belittle the Many contributions made by our military in Europe. Many Fine individuals have sacrificed and Given their youth time and Best ideas to their endeavours. However we live in a changing world and we must demand our leaders freshly and realistically perceive and react to these changes. Our country no longer has the billions of dollars or the desire for any cause not truly Worth sacrificing for. Stremple director department of defense office of dependents schools Alexandria va., replies the sat is a test designed to measure the mathematical and verbal reasoning skills related to a students successful performance in the freshman year of College. In that sense it provides a measure of the students academic preparation his or her ability to compete academically and is a gauge of the students potential to gain admission to a Given College. It is not the Only Factor used by College admissions officers in determining acceptance and is in fact regarded As a supplement to the other materials a student submits with any application package. The degree to which the sat score figures into the pen pals i am stationed at an isolated detachment in Turkey. I am an avid letter writer and have plenty of time to write. Some colleges request sat scores but do not require their submission. Others require scores and will use them along with records of academic and extracurricular achievement admissions essays and other factors in their admissions formula. A record of students sat scores is maintained by the educational testing service in Princeton n.j., indefinitely but the question of How Long a students scores Are Good again depends on the College. There Are often adult or non traditional student programs at colleges and universities which have admissions standards which do not require sat scores or some of the other material often required for students just graduating from High school. Acceptance into programs of this Type May be based on factors related to the students work experience previous College education or successful completion of courses in the adult program. Again the standards of acceptance depend on the specific program. Any person considering enrolment should Contact the institution for its policy on the tie ribbons inside i enjoy the stars and stripes and look Forward to it arriving in saudi Arabia. Being a lifetime member of the non commissioned officers association co and a trustee of the screaming Eagle chapter i noticed a recent letter about tying ribbons on antennas and doors. Having spent five years in Europe i know the terrorist threat and can understand the writers concern. Walter Krueger did not Tell Europe to put ribbons on antennas and doors. It was primarily directed at United states locations. However it could be suggested that for those proud americans in Europe ribbons be put in offices Day rooms Barracks rooms and other Interior locations. In a sure that there Are common sense ways to support our program without exposing your family to danger. I too have a family in the states and would not do anything to cause them to be harmed. Thanks for the support stars and stripes. We re doing our part in saudi Arabia. A staff sgt. Mike Felton operation desert shield european edition circulation 190,000 col Gene e.
