Memphis Belle is a fictionalized version of an actual event that took place in 1943 the 25th bombing Mission of a b-17 flying fortress. Catherine Wyler daughter of legendary film director William Wyler produced the movie with David Putnam chariots of fire and the killing Fields based on a documentary that her father had filmed of the original Memphis Belle on several of her missions during Wii. The War and the men at War have not been Given the Hollywood gloss Over so Many of the past War films have had. The characters Are human presented with All their flaws and insecurities. The acting and directing Are Superb throughout but really come to the fore during the scenes of the Daylight bombing run Over Bremen. There a no false bravado Here no posturing or sloganeering. Derringer manages to alienate everyone he comes in Contact with looking at everything As a publicity event and overlooking the dangers and terrors of the bombing runs. David Strathairn does an excellent Job of portraying the commanding officer. He ably projects the sense of aloneness of a combat commander. He has ordered the men on this Mission and must take sole responsibility for the outcome. Even on a Good Day it is evident that he has dispatched some Brave Young men to their deaths. Since it is a War movie there have to be action scenes conveying the horror of Battle. The director has managed to present such scenes without the hype of gratuitous blood and Gore. With the Superb acting direction and cinematography the film is already a critical Success. It remains to be seen if movies of a military nature Are Box office material. Nevertheless if people want to see a True to life film Young men doing what they were called on to do without the Glitz and Glamor of Hollywood them Memphis Belle is two hours Well spent.
