The provision for a waiting period was approved after a week of floor debate and Back room jockeying in which the original proposal for a seven Day waiting period was reduced to pick up support for the Bill. The action Friday cleared the Way for a vote on a Complete anti crime package after Congress returns from a fourth of july recess. The 67-32 vote virtually assures that a Bill providing for a waiting period to buy handguns will be passed by Congress. The House has passed a similar measure. The Striate measure received one More vote than is needed to override a presidential veto. Nineteen republicans joined 48 democrats in approving the Compromise crafted Friday by Senate majority Leader George j. Mitchell and the Senate minority Leader Bob Dole.
