But when the action Cranks up and the swords and arrows Start singing All that fades far into the background in this Rich rousing beautifully photographed film. The Basic Story remains As it has always been but it has been Given a few additional and colourful details by writers pen Densham and John Watson. The film opens in the late 12th Century with Robin in a Middle Eastern prison during the crusades. When Robin makes a break for it he saves the life of the Moor Azeem mor Gan Freeman who pledges to stick with his Benefactor until he can return the favor. They travel Back to Britain to find Robins father murdered by the evil sheriff of Nottingham Alan Rickma who is building his own Power base among the country a Barons while King Richard the lion carted is fighting the crusades. His estate and wealth confiscated and his father dead Robin flees into Sherwood Forest where the sheriffs men fear to go because they think if a haunted. Its haunted All right a but not by spirits. This is where the merry men hang out. Robin soon Falls in with them and unites the rag tag band to fight the oppression of the greedy ruthless sheriff and his minions. Its Clear that Costner a laconic style is not Well suited to a character who is supposedly a fiery Leader of men. He a not helped much by the script which turns him into a new age sensitive Guy. He cries gets flustered when he loses his sword and even asks an antagonist a did 1 wrong you in a previous life Quot lets not even talk about his truly disastrous a and mercifully few a attempts at affecting an English accent. But he certain by looks the part and his minor failings Are More than balanced by a Quick paced Story and a great supporting cast. Freeman is Superb As always even though he a saddled with a slew of a a ainu to these christians a scream lines. The other leaders of the merry men Are also sharply drawn especially Michael Mcshane As Friar tuck Jund Nick Brimble As Little John. Christian Slater is a bit wan As will Scarlett but he gets Good lines and also has a startling revelation for Robin late in the film. As the fair Damsel maid Marian Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio is a stunner although she inexplicably goes from sword slashing hellion in the Early scenes to shrieking Wussy during the climactic Battle near the end. Rickman so oily As the bad Guy in die Hurd almost steals this show playing the sheriff As a completely amoral slug. Upon hearing that Robin has robbed yet another Carriage of Rich Folk Riding through the Forest he turns apoplectic. A no More table scraps for the lepers no More merciful beheading and cancel Christmas Quot he roars in frustration. Director Kevin Reynolds ends the film with a flourish. The last scene has a Cameo by an actor whose name Isnit in the credits but who  be a More perfect Choice for that particular moment in this particular film. It was such a delightful Surprise that the audience at my screening burst into applause. On the whole the strengths of this film far outweigh its weaknesses and make for a rollicking Good time.
