European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - October 6, 1991, Darmstadt, Hesse Bush will run again a away from White House there still Isnit a Strong democratic candidate who wants to run against president Bush next year and its no wonder. Bush a popularity is unusually. High for a president who has been in office three years. Every few weeks some fringe politician announces he May run or that he a definitely going to run but these people Haven to amounted to much. The prohibition party usually has a can Ditc but if it has one next year he a going to have even less for a Chance than usual after that announcement recently that a few drinks Are Good for you. I have a funny feeling that Bush is going to Spring a Surprise. He a going to scare off All the potential democratic candidates and then at the last minute after it s too late for a serious Democrat to get a Campaign going announce he does no to want to be president anymore. Why would he want to be president for four More years he already has almost everything you can get out of being president. A he a had his name listed As president in the Yale alumni bulletin so All his classmates know he has been a Success. A build a Library with his name on it for his papers. A his name is permanently listed in the history books with George Washington. Abraham Lincoln and the 37 other men who have been president. A hell be Able to get a couple of million dollars for writing a Book about his time in the White House. A hell have a lifetime income As former president of $99,500 a year. That retirement income does no to get any bigger if he works As president for four More years. A the japanese gave Ronald Reagan $2 million to come to Tokyo and give a few Little talks. They a probably give Bush that much too so Money by a problem for him. A a hell get free doctors and hospitals for the rest of his life. With All those things going for him Why would Bush want to be president four More years things can Only get worse. Lets look at the advantages to quitting while he s ahead a he have the embarrassing Job of telling Dan Quayle he does no to want him As his Iee president am More. A he could take a summer action in Maine without having it camera Crews taking pictures every time he hit a Ball caught a fish or took a ride in his boat. A there would no longer be the worry about being shot at every time lie appeared in Public. A he have to ii Point any More supreme court justices. These add up so a prediction is George Bush will not run again. Hell give several reasons for retiring. Hell choose from among these a he wants to spend More time with his family. A he wants to spend less time with his family. A his doctors have advised him he might to consider a lighter schedule. A his doctors want him to get More exercise than he has time for As president. A he has an offer of a better Job. A he has fallen in love with another woman and does no to want to put the country through a Long ugly divorce proceeding with his wife Barbara who is demanding half of All he has made while he has been president because she claims she made him what he is today. Bush will announce that Quayle has been a wonderful vice president that he is a great american and a Fine golfer but he wont say Quayle should be the next president. Hell say Quayle should spend More time with his family and work on his putting. Maybe hell say James Baker should be the next president. Andy Rooney is a former stars and stripes dark Side highlighted on tvs a lbs a by Howard Rosenberg los Angeles times he was Complex and driven a squinting Flap eared ruthless big drinking Chain smoking giant Ruffian of a texan who could eyeball a Fella into doing what he wanted him to do. But his dreams of a grand new society without poverty were incinerated in the flames of americans ghettos and the napalm of Vietnam. Here was a hot House politician who courted greatness As aggressively As he did voters Only to wed himself to a military and political debacle that was to haunt him and drive him from office. Here was a crude but charming country Democrat who made populism the sinew of his body politic. Yet in the end it was the people who abandoned than merely a Man Lyndon Baines Johnson was an event. A the was just interesting As hell a someone recalls in lbs a four hour documentary on pcs stateside. Happy Days Are Here again for lbs is historical filmmaking at its deepest and classiest a full warm blooded 10-gallon-sized portrait that captures the Barbecue Aroma of Texas politics the shadowy Wheeling and dealing of Washington and the rhythms and demons of the Man who succeeded John f. Kennedy As president. Lbs is joined on the stateside to front by a docudrama recalling the 14-month Iran hostage crisis that ended Jan. 20, 1981, the Day Jimmy Carter relinquished the presidency to Ronald Reagan. Iran Days of crisis also airs in two parts opening on cables int network. It is Likely that not even last season s pcs Behemoth the civil War significantly altered the pub up president Johnson at 1966 awards dinner. Lie perception that historical documentaries Are necessarily egg headed and Dull and that Only through the Oft distorted Lens of docudrama can events of the past become exciting and captivating on to. At the Center of both lbs and Days no cd Risis Are presidencies maimed by foreign tragedy. While the former is mesmerizing the latter is Only modestly distinguished and occasionally interesting. The components of these features share another theme a disappointment Carters Over his failure to free the hostages the script does not explore recent charges that Reagan a crowd got Iran to delay its release until he Bixik office and Johnson a that the War in Vietnam torched much of what he had worked for and that even his landmark civil rights act did not earn him Universal respect from inner City Blacks and other minorities. Wonderfully narrated by historian David me Bullough the american experience Host who was also the voice for the civil War lbs kicks off we Ith Johnson As an eager Young candidate learning stuff the ballot politics in the Muddy backwaters of Texas ultimately becoming known As the Grinch who stole the 194k senatorial election. What begins As a rollicking country fiddle test years later will end As a sad Waltz. Some incredible White House photos and footage of Johnson s 1965 inaugural Ball make the Point. Grubin and co executive producer Patricia Crini slow Down the latter letting us see the smiles and optimism on the faces of the president and vice president Hubert Humphrey As they Glide across the dance floor with their wives in a sort of eerie Ballet. It takes on special poignancy in View of what is to follow. Less than four years later a the War in Vietnam that he accelerated and opposition to it now raging a Johnson will be out of office having chosen not to seek re election against a noisy barrage of opposition. Replayed several times the Ball sequence is a defining moment in a Story about a Man depicted Here As Many men a new Deal Democrat who turned reactionary when it served his purpose a segregationist who later crusade for integration yet continued in private to use the Quot no word for Blacks a pragmatist and a visionary a coarse offensive boor whose Powers of cajole by were legendary. A when that Man started to work on you a says George Reedy who was a Johnson press Secretary a fall of a sudden you Felt like you were standing under a Waterfall and the stuff was pouring on few presidents have engendered such intense feelings pro and con and this above All is what emerges from this superlative profile of americans 36th chief executive. Quot i liked him when i was with him a says lbs biographer Ronnie Dugger. A More than i did when i was thinking about 6. 1991 sunday a Page 7
