Letters to the editor learn from tragedy my heart goes out to sgt. And mrs. Radik whose son died in a tragic school bus Accident. On March 19,1 witnessed some unbelievable behaviour on bus 24 As it headed to Frankfurt elementary school. Children were running up and Down the aisles standing and jumping on the seats and swinging from the overhead bars trying to kick the windows. This behaviour continued for about five Kilometres. Where was the bus Monitor Here in Frankfurt rosters Are sent out monthly listing the Date s when the sponsor is to ride the bus. Duty numbers Are listed so you can change Days if need be. Spouses can ride the bus in place of the sponsor. The safety of our children is too important to be taken lightly. If any Good can come from sgt. And mrs. Radikas tragic loss let it be that we place the memory of their son Nicholas in our hearts and make sure it never happens again. A Patricia c. Pfanzelter Frankfurt Germany we soldiers needed on buses As a former Vilseck elementary school bus Monitor i could not understand the policy described in the article concerning the unfortunate bus Accident in the Vilseck area. It stated that the unit will provide Parent monitors to ride the school buses throughout the week. I Rode a school bus As a Monitor for two years and Only during the Gulf War did anyone from a command get on the bus and say they were assigned to ride the bus As a Monitor. During my time As a Monitor i was spit upon kicked and cursed by children from kindergarten to sixth Grade. This was a thankless Job that provided no satisfaction and two years was enough for me. Any time there were problems with the kids the Monitor was always brushed off by the people at the logistics department. When i tried to get a problem child removed from the bus they would say the command let the sponsor go to the school to pick up the child because he the sponsor was needed for the Mission. If there were a policy that would put soldiers on the buses to keep the children Safe and quiet it would have been Nice for this to have happened Long ago before this tragedy occurred since children Riding the buses do not feel it necessary to listen to civilian monitors. A Geri Ruppe Vilseck German child s death decried the death of a 6-year-old boy on a school bus is More than a tragedy. Those of us As parents military and Community leaders should feel ashamed disgusted and Hurt at this senseless loss. It has concerned me since the school year began a the somewhat lackadaisical attitude that is taken toward the safety of our children during the trip to and from school. The importance of wearing safety belts and child restraint systems is emphasized yet these Are not provided on the school bus a vehicle which in some cases has to travel on the autobahn. Bus monitors Are vital but the system of the sponsor doing this is fallible often because of Field exercises try temporary duty Etc. Is the safety of our children not Worth the expense to employ a permanent bus Monitor for those few hours each Day surely if we can find the funds to employ lunch monitors to keep control at lunch time we can find them to ensure that our children Are a bit safer on their ride to and from school. My conscience however compels me to say that this was a tragedy that could have been avoided. Current policy not just by 7th at army training com but also by 3rd id inf Divis extremely lax on when bus monitors should be present on school buses but extremely restrictive on who can be bus monitors. My Coic non commissioned officer in charge is subject to bus Monitor duty As he has a school age daughter Riding the buses. I am not As i have no children. One time the demands of my no ice a Job made him unavailable for bus Monitor duty but the installation management office refused to allow me to substitute for him regardless of the fact that i willingly volunteered. A Monitor is a necessary safety precaution. Just because someone does not have children does not make them ineligible to Monitor school buses. Volunteers should be solicited for this duty and there should be a Monitor on every school bus every Day. If anyone is worried about unsuitable people serving As monitors there could be a screening process. Please print my name. If anyone has a problem with the things in be said in this letter let them explain their opinion to those poor parents in Vilseck. If there had been a Monitor on that bus i believe their son would be alive today. Furthermore if my suggestions Are taken and even one child a life is saved because of them it is Worth it. A spec. . Walker Wurzburg Germany world without Money does anyone out there Ever think about what it would be like to not be controlled by paper Bills and coins this letter is in response to Many of the whining notes of blame for the state of the . Economy. Its sad that Competition is measured in Money. Why do humans care what nationality produces the finest cars and leather products people Are people. What is Good is Good and vice versa. Can one be Happy with knowing that his weeks earnings Are not enough what is enough would human beings become equal As a result of their abolishment of colourful strips of meaningful and dear paper and too often handled coins. How is it that the majority a work hard unhappily so that they can eat and sleep throughout the week and maybe go to the Cinema or out dancing on a Short but awaited saturday night imagine How the world would turn without Money. Whatever is happening to the . Economy is definitely being pondered upon out of proportion. Who cares of course there Are Many that care because their lives Are controlled by material things. But Isnit it unfortunate a Darrin Noble Karlsruhe . Must Aid Cis i am concerned by the View of Many who insist that the United states should concentrate its efforts solely on self improvement. It is contended that spending Money on the countries of the Commonwealth of Independent states deprives american citizens of a better Standard of life. Nothing could be further from the truth. As the Only existing a superpower a it is the obligation of the United states to ensure economic political and social stability and peace throughout the world. Only under these conditions will All nations including the United states be Able to Prosper. Investing in the welfare of the Cis and All nations offers an unprecedented Opportunity for the . Government to guarantee the Long term Well being of the american people.
