It was almost As if Alex Haley had written two autobiographies one for this gentleman and another for everyone else. And then i realized what the problem was. It s the same problem that arises whenever one tries to pigeonhole someone As Complex As Malcolm i have read the autobiography of Malcolm x five times and each time i read it 1 see a different Side of him. The first time i read it was As an angry 15-year-old member of a group that loosely followed the teachings of Elijah Muhammad. I was Only interested in the rhetoric of Malcolm s Black Muslim Days. He gave vent to my feelings of anger and frustration and he did it with such eloquence that i saw Little else. In later years i remember Reading a chapter out loud to some friends who were impressed by the excitement and adventure of Malcolm a Days As a Street Hustler. And i have to admit that there was a time when i too saw Only this. There Are those like supreme court Justice Clarence Thomas who were impressed by Malcolm a Rise through self education while in prison from a barely literate Man with an eighth Grade education to one who lectured and debated at Harvard and Oxford. Some of them see Only this. But to really gain an appreciation for this Man one has to read the whole Story from Start to finish because he was All of these things and much More.
