Each succeeding film in the Dis Ney catalogue strengthens that Bond with kids and the studio s latest full length feature Aladdin is no exception. The Story opens in the mythical mid dle Eastern City of agr Aba Home to Aladdin or Al As he likes to be called. He s a poor but Good hearted orphan who survives by wit and guile As he pilfer the local merchants for a loaf of bread Here a piece of fruit there. With his mischievous Monkey Friend Abu by his Side Aladdin is Content to aimlessly while away his youth. He is soon ensnared in a dastardly plot engineered by Jafar the evil vizier to the local Sultan to find the famous magic lamp and its mystical inhabitant the Genie who supposedly offers unlimited Power to the lamp s owner. Aladdin s life is further complicated by the Sultan s daughter Jasmine who is being pushed into an arranged marriage against her will. She chafes at the Monotony of Palace life and Longs to experience the real world. She runs into Aladdin one Day after secretly scaling the Palace Wall and wandering around the local Market place. He is instantly smitten with her but knows that Only a Prince could Hope to have a shot at winning her. He enlists the Genie s help to do this even As Jafar plots to steal the lamp and its Power from the boy. All the characters Are Well drawn and full of life but the two nonhuman ones steal most of the Best lines. Cranky standup comedian Gilbert Gottfried transfers his own prickly personality to Lago Jafar s pet Parrot while the inimitable Robin Williams breathes frenetic life into the big Blue Genie. His scattershot Stream of consciousness act is a riot even though much of his humor is aimed at adults in the Audi ence and will Likely Fly Over the Heads of the younger kids in the crowd. The technical aspects of the Anima Tion easily meet the lofty standards that we be come to expect from Disney. Some scenes have a nifty 3-d Quality that is achieved by blurring the Back ground slightly. Other scenes that stand out for their sheer visual Impact in clude Aladdin s heart pounding escape from a crumbling Cavern and a roman tic whirl around the world that Aladdin and Jasmine take aboard his faithful magic carpet. The one thing that has always amazed me about Disney films above All else is the sheer expressiveness of the characters. The Genie mugs his Way through a variety of Superb impressions of Well known people including Arnold Schwarzenegger George Bush Groucho Marx de Sullivan Rodney Dangerfield and Jack Nicholson. There is further Delight in watching Aladdin s magic carpet communicate an Aston Ishing variety of emotions without Mak ing a sound. For All its strengths i thought there were two ways in which this film suffers in comparison to the four Star Beauty and the beast. One is that the relation ship Between Aladdin and Jasmine does t have nearly the kind of tragic life and death imperative that suffused the Romance Between Belle and the cursed Prince. The other is that the songs Aren t As Catchy even though Ajan Menken who wrote much of the score for Beauty and the beast co wrote most of the tunes for this one As Well. For those reasons i m inclined to shave the rating for Aladdin to a me re three stars. But be assured this is qual Ity family fare that will make a worthy addition to your Disney video collection.
