The super bowl is such a huge undertaking and production Wise Well have Many of the same people in place from last year said Abc sports executive producer Tommy Roy. This just makes it so much  the nil s refusal to make the 1994 super bowl part of the last to package cleared the Way for Abc s repeat. The nil auctioned off the game last april but Abc and lbs refused to bid. Abc thus got the game for an opening bid of $40 million. Once again Abc gets to showcase Dallas which is to the nil in ratings terms what notre Dame is to College football. Those who Don t love the cowboys hate them and that makes for Good to. It s funny. But it s fair to say that the number of women who actually have an Affinity for the game is dwarfed by the number of women who think of it As one of those Peculiar male rituals such As burping at ear splitting volume and leaving the toilet seat up. My Mother Falls solidly into the latter category. She just does t get it. She never tires of telling the Story of How i threw four close High school friends out of her Long Island Home when the Bills beat my new York jets in a 1981 wild card playoff game. Neither team had done much in years and emotions were running High in the Vinch household especially since one of my friends was attending the University of Buffalo at the time and had dumped his boyhood team the jets to Root for the Bills. The traitorous Cretin. Buffalo jumped out to a big Lead but the jets put on a furious second half comeback. With just seconds left to play they trailed by four Points and were faced with fourth Down on the Bills 11-Yard-line. Quarterback Richard Todd May his fat butt roast in hell for All eternity dropped Back fired into the end zone and. One of the Bills picked off the pass snuffing out the jets Hopes. Enraged beyond All reason i literally pushed my friends out the door and spent the rest of the Day sulking in my room. Only someone who has watched jets blow game after game in the Quarter Century since their one shining moment of glory in the 1969 super bowl can fully appreciate this fit of pique. Naturally it bewilder my Mother to this Day. She recounts the tale at virtually every family gathering during football season. He just kicked them All out she marvels it s useless to try to explain this kind of thing to her. I la say i hate the Bills or dolphins or Colts or whomever the jets Are playing that particular week. I just hate  that s Standard football fan talk. But it s an alien concept to dear old mom. Why do you hate them Shell reply. Is that a Nice thing to say luckily for me she s usually Only too Happy to hit the mall for a few hours on game Day. Unfortunately this is bad news for Kim. Whenever we visit my parents during football season my Mother tries to drag Kim along on the Assumption that since she is a woman she must Harbor a disdain for the game. But Kim bless her heart likes to watch football and is knowledgeable. She can explain the difference be tween an off tackle run and an end around knows Why a crack Back Block is illegal and most importantly is fully aware of How much nachos mini hotdogs and Beer contribute to one s Overall enjoyment of a football telecast. She grew up in California rooting for the Oakland raiders in their bad old Days when Benda Vinson was clothes lining opponents. I Don t want to go shopping with your Mother i want to watch the game Shell whine to me As if it should be my Job to explain to my mom that she would rather watch a Bunch of grown men Chase an Oblong spheroid than peruse purses at Penney s. The Good news is that my Mother does t like to venture out to unfamiliar malls. Since she s visiting us this time Kim is off the Hook. The bad news is that it still leaves us with the dilemma of How to get her out of our hair for a few hours during the super bowl telecast. Mothers.
