Grass roots ideas twice in recent issues i have read let. Tors written by civilians who Are concerned about How the High grass is affecting morale in military communities. The first was written by a woman in Vilseck who claims that the army made a mistake by not renewing the grass cutting contract for the common areas in the Vil seek housing areas. The High grass she claims Lowers morale and gives people passing through the Community a bad impression. The second letter stated that because t of the decision to have soldiers mow their own lawns her Wiesbaden Community has deteriorated from a Community of excellence to a a Semi Community the writer claims that the knee High grass is not Only a Haven for rodents and a Hazard for children but also the source of her Community slow Pride. She suggests that soldiers in need of correctional duties be tasked to mow Public areas under a guard if necessary. The decision to have soldiers mow their own Lawn was most Likely dictated by budgetary restraints. Something called the draw Down. If there a no Money the soldiers pick up the Mission. Second the writer makes it sound As if soldiers Are not responsible for their actions. She states that this Type of behaviour in children is known As attention deficit. She trusts us to carry firearms and do fend her nation but she implies that sol Dicks Arentt responsible enough to mow their lawns. If she knows that soldiers work 10 to 12 hours a Day then How can she suggest everyone mow their grass at the same time. Get real. Remember the Field duty and toys temporary duties ? it sounds to me like her letter was the decision no Well thought out and impulsive. If she feels so strongly about the common areas of her Community Why not form a group of volunteers to mow the grass if she is a schoolteacher maybe the teachers could mow the grass around the school. Wiesbaden is her Home also the soldiers done to live there alone. And yes soldiers in Augsburg mow grass As part of their military duties and As part of their duties As family housing residents. No they did no to get in trouble they re just members of the Community. A sgt. 1st class Lisa m. Hunter Augsburg German take responsibility in response to a recent letter writer who complained about the mowing at Wiesbaden and suggested hiring contractors to do it As a Civili Afi my observations Are that military spouses Are comparable to welfare recipients in the states. All you hear from them Are a i want i want give me give me and complain what is wrong with the people living in housing taking some responsibility for their surroundings Why can to they go to a self help for materials or supplies for minor repairs and Upkeep Why not have Lawn mowers in the areas for residents to use if they had their own Homes and were not a living off the government a they would be taking care of their properties and doing their own work. When they get free housing utilities and medical care Why can to they be asked to do something in return Pride and responsibility go a Long Way in the development of personal self. Use some of that negative Energy you Are always showering on others by getting off your a complaining duffs and show some appreciation for what you Are Given. No other Job provides you with All the benefits you Are Given by the military. As civilians we pay for everything you get yours free and want More. Stop the complaining and become a useful citizen of society. By the Way i am an sex military spouse who has Pride and self respect and who has raised four kids worked with boy scouts and girl scouts coached Little league and kids bowl Rig Pat etc., besides taking Core of my Home and surroundings proudly. A Linda Bibl. Karlsruhe Germany 2 groups thanked in a coming to the end of my temporary duty assignment Here at Rhein main a Germany and 1 would like to thank two groups of people i do not even know. The first group of people was responsible for making All the clubs and any other Public place on Raf Alconbury smoke fryc. By the Way the clubs were All packed and it was very enjoyable. A the second group of people is the folks who took a Little Lime out of their Day to Stop at a share a ride on Rhein main and take my friends or myself a Little closer to where we needed to go. Thank you for making our lives a Little better. Richard d. Cook Rhein main a Germany. Rude treatment i recently returned from a vacation in Turkey. I purchased my ticket through a local German travel Agency. I returned to Frankfurt on a relatively Small charter flight and wound up entering through a Gate that is not normally used by americans. Upon entering the customs area with the other 100 or so passengers i was rudely singled out and pulled aside by German immigration authorities. The agent demanded my passport and boarding pass. He was rude to the Point that he slammed his fist on the table and raised his voice i believe because i told him in my Best rudimentary German that 1 had not initially understood what he had requested. After it was determined that English was the common ground he asked me As he snatched my passport what i was doing in this country. I am not naive Overly sensitive militant or jaded but i was absolutely shocked by this incident. Once this gentleman realized that i was an american he changed his Demeanour and became very anxious and abruptly left. Needless to say 1 was am just a Little upset. The problem i have with All this is that on any Given Day As a member of the United states air Force and North Atlantic treaty organization i May be required to put my life on the line for that gentleman his family his Way of life and the government he represents. I done to believe a member of any civilized society should be subjected to this sort of humiliation or to Germany a selective enforcement of its racially motivated immigration Laws of did i mention that they did not Stop or question any of the other passengers on the flight some of which i knew personally to be foreign nationals needless to say i complained and the officials at the entry Point let me know in no Uncertain terms they did not care what i thought of the incident that had just occurred a Rommel Ivory Zamstein a Germany its not exploitation men and women Are not exploited. Some men and women find it desirable to see other men and women in the nude and having sex. To is this desire that is exploited by businesses. As Long As the demand continues so will the Supply. The fact is people can demean Only themselves not others. Models who pose for an adult Magazine or act in an adult movie and feel like they have done something wrong demeaned themselves. They have nobody to blame except themselves for their behaviour. The majors sarcastic explanation that hiding the covers of adult magazines on Public displays is a form of censorship or that if this material is so beneficial we should expose our children to it in Library ies and at Home is an example of the kind of narrow minded thinking that has prompted me to write this letter. Just like a gun our society recognizes that sexual material under the wrong circumstances can be harmful to a child so instead of denying our right to Bear arms our society uses the Law to define the circumstances under which we possess and use guns. That is Why we have the boards hiding the covers of adult magazines to protect our children and others like the major. It is not censorship of any kind. If you do not like adult entertainment Slop buying it. A Robert a. Smith Heidelberg Germany Afes heal thyself i have closely followed the articles about a a adult material in our bookstores especially the letters from the readers. However before the army and air Force Exchange service complains about someone else a dirty laundry they clean their own House first i find it unfair that they Are being so judgmental. Our local Post Exchange has recently redone its video display. They have erotic movies and Playboy videos displayed alongside a collection of children a classic cartoons. In the menus clothing department a dress shirt was displayed on a Torso mannequin. Propped up to this handsome tasteful attire were two Playboy videos. Does no to this Lead us to believe that our family shopping Center is just As offending As our Bookstore i certainly Hope that cafes has an extra scrub Brush Handy. This kind of material has been described As vile crude sexually discriminating and caters to the wrong kind of people. We All know cafes do that. Perhaps this All sounds sarcastic or absurd. Maybe it is. I feel the whole thing teeters on the Edge of Absurdity. The blame for shamelessness is shifted to a Scapegoat. Stars and stripes bookstores have Clear regulations on display for such material. So far i have yet to see a store that has failed to follow the rules. It should be in the hands of the parents to not allow their children to roam about where they do not belong. I done to subscribe to nor read adult magazines but i done to go into a Bookstore Ana seek them out so that i May find myself off ended either. It a. Kenny Giessen Germany i have been Reading with interest the letters expressing various views about adult magazines m the stars and stripes bookstores. The june 19 letter to the editor from a major has finally irked me into sharing my own opinions. I was taken Aback by the letter writers complaint that proponents of adult entertainment always argue about their Reading such a remark makes me wonder if the major is wearing an american military uniform. R we always hear the cons talking about the exploitation and demeaning of women in adult entertainment. Talk to the Centrefold models and they will Call it talk to the letter writer and he will Call it exploitation.
