European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 10, 1994, Darmstadt, Hesse The Earp Brothers a played by from left Michael Madsen Kevin Costner Linden Ashby and David Andrews a line up behind their women from left Catherine of Hara Mare Winningham Alison Elliott and Jobeth Williams in the epic Saga of the american West Wyatt Earp. A portrayed by big films and family of Mare by Cynthia Robbins san Francisco examiner. 18 30 in the morning actress Mare Winningham shakes hands like she has been up for hours. A Cruncher. Albeit a Friendly Cruncher. But you know from the git go that Shell be forthright and Blunt. The Only thing Shell Waffle on is exactly where she her husband and their five children live. Quot just say which in her Book covers a lot of territory. Winningham just finished two movies with Kevin Costner. In one she plays a whore in the other a wife. The wife is Costner a in a John Avent directed film called the War which is about Vietnam. The Miore Mattie is Wyatt Earp a common Law spouse in the just opened three hour biopic Wyatt Earp written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan. Things end badly for Mattie laudanum addiction and terminal Kinky hair. Its not like she does no to know the game. Wyatt makes her a bad bargain and she accepts. Later when he throws her Over for a Young woman named Josie whom he stayed married to for 46 years and who is buried next to him in Colm Mattie goes ballistic. She also loses Wyatt. When i Tell Winningham that i think All the women in Earp Are either whiners or whores she takes umbrage. After All she reminds me that a the Way women were Back then. As for herself she a a feminist. Has been since her Junior year in High school Back in 1975, when her first drama teacher Quot was an ardent feminist me to the music of Kate Wolf Joni Mitchell and Kate and Anna Mcgarrigle. I was doing Shakespeare in the 11th Grade but always with this feminist slant. My role in twelfth night Olivia i remember saying had feminist there has always been this kind of duality in win Gingham. The feminist on one Side the traditional Catholic raised mama on the other. Quot i had an Early marriage because a husband and a family Quot she says. Quot i was 19. Yet i so desperately listened to my Little voice which was screaming at me a you re going to do some out of the Way a that first marriage was Over when she was 20, but says Winningham a i held up the idea of marriage As forever so i took this breakup As a failure. I think that a Why when i met Bill my husband that i got pregnant immediately and we did no to get married until after our first child was bom. After our son s birth i calmed Down a bit in my quest for Home and at 35, Winningham is girls shy slender. The five babies in seven years does no to show at least not on the outside. Her new Bebe Raisin coloured suit is a size 6. And her face a with its downward slash of a Mouth Tomboy pug nose and Raggedy Andy Brown Button eyes a is nearly totally devoid of makeup. Quot makeup does t work on me. You put on Mouth and eyes and it just gets Krashier and Krashier and anyone who saw the Tbs reruns of the Thorn Birds in which Winningham played a teen Ager with badly bobbed hair Drippy Mascara and lobby red lipstick knows she Speaks the truth. The daughter of the Cal state Northridge athletic director Winningham grew up in the san Fernando Valley and acted up a storm in High school. She honed her Talent for three years in the teenage a drama workshop at Northridge and performed with the . Free Shakespeare company. When she was a High school senior she was cast in a Lead role in the first of her 35 to movies special olympics. It was a Good Start to a very strange career one punctuated with memorable roles and five babies. Winningham made the decision Early on that she be away from her family for months at a time. And when she and her writer husband Bill Mapel lived in a Cabin somewhere North of Tahoe snowed in often for three months at a stretch she got plenty of the togetherness she always sought. She says All of her babies were born in that Home with midwives. Quot when it came time to take someone to the pre a Miere of Wyatt Earp which was the same night As her daughters first Ballet recital Winningham says she Quot agonized about it. A my husband said head go and get a videotape that this was an important thing for me. But i was still torn. Who was going to be my a Date a a she wound up taking her sister. Maybe her kids who Range in age from 12 Clear Down to 5, have gotten Mattie anyway. She has a real problem and its not just opium. You might say she was obsessed with a Man who was just Gonna Hurt the Dickens out of her. Quot this role was very physical and 1 saw her that Way a says Winningham. Quot and she was an opium addict which was wonderful to try to figure out How to play. Larry Kasdan gave me these edgy confrontational scenes on laudanum and i said a How do you want me to play it a a Quot you la figure it out a Kasdan told her. A i just told myself that no matter How Good the drug she was having the kind of emotional Heights a like being the Skinny person who lifts the car with the baby underneath a where the adrenaline will carry the result Winningham plays hysteria very Well.
