Newton said Alconbury officials in turn told him that their original information was Correct. A spokeswoman for the 10th air base Wing at Alconbury said that the Huntingdonshire District Council was Given the name and unit of the a co a assignment and that tax enforcement was the responsibility of local British authorities. She said the service member a name could not a be released. The spokeswoman also said Huntingdonshire was the Only District trying to collect Back taxes from air Force members in England. The air Force she said did not know the total number of airmen who might owe Back taxes to  in the United kingdom. Navy in London said the Navy was unaware of the High courts april 19 ruling. He said Navy officials did not know whether any sailors a owed Back taxes. Newton said the District obtained the court summons for the technical sergeant after it received a letter from the air Force dated june 24. The letter said in effect that the air Force could not assist the District on a Broad front with the collection matter and that a Resolution would be sought Between the two governments. Poll tax debts became an Issue for service members after the Huntingdonshire District Council decided to test in court its belief that service members could be held liable for their British spouses tax payments. The District chose three Alconbury service members to use in a test Case and a local British court ruled that the service members were indeed liable. The air Force appealed the Case to the British High court in London which agreed april 19 with the lower court and dismissed the Case. The High court also ruled that the three service members had to pay court costs. Huntingdonshire Legal officials estimated that court costs totalled about 4,000 pounds or about $6,400.
