A practice ing attorney since 1964, Smaltz has specialized in defending White Collar crimes but handles civil cases As Well. As Independent counsel Smaltz will examine gifts to Espy of travel lodging and professional sports tickets from Quaker Oats co. And from Arkansas based Tyson foods inc., the nation s largest poultry producer. Smaltz also will be free to examine any other allegations of criminal wrongdoing that May arise from the investigation. The investigation is an embarrassment for president Clinton and his wife Hill Ary Rodham Clinton because of their close connection with Tyson when Clin ton was Arkansas governor. In May 1993, Espy accepted lodging from Tyson during a trip to Arkansas arid he travelled Back to Washington on a com Pany Jet. The agriculture department later reimbursed the poultry producer. Espy and a companion Patricia Demp sey also received tickets from Tyson to a Jan. 16 National football league playoff game in Dallas but Espy said he repaid the Cost of his ticket. He received a free National basketball association playoff ticket in june 1993 from Chicago based Quaker Oats a Large food company. Quaker Oats said Espy never repaid the $45 ticket and Espy has not disputed that statement. Investigators have looked beyond those gifts to whether Espy s aides destroyed records or interfered with the drafting of tighter safety regulations for the poultry Industry.
