Halberstam . I recently received an interesting letter from a mrs. M. Of Buffalo n.y., in response to an earlier column of mine on anger. In the column i had said it was very helpful for angry people to release their anger rather than to bottle it up. Mrs. M. Points out perhaps letting it All out makes the angry ones live longer but you had better explain what it does to the family that has to live with the angry  she then gave a number of vivid examples of friends and relatives who expressively and dramatically gave vent to their anger for years. They All lived to Ripe old Ages but their relatives were worn out pre maturely either dying or retiring with serious illness after too Brief a time. One of the examples mrs. M. Gave however illustrates the essential Point i was trying to make in the original column. She says i once went to Call on a Friend in the Hospital and brought him a chocolate Milkshake his favorite. Where did it end up right in my face and All Over my clothes. He just happened to be angry about something when i a  that s not what i meant by the appropriate release of anger. They have however mastered the Art of holding in their feelings so completely that to the world they present Happy smiling faces. Only their families know the brooding fury that lurks beneath the surface. Physicians and relatives should keep a close Eye out for discrepancies Between what a person is saying and the tone of voice and expression with which it is said. I once had a patient an elderly woman who lived alone in a Small House. Her children quite successful lived scattered All Over the United states. When i asked her about her oldest son she smiled and said of he s very Busy. He just does t have time for anyone like  she smiled  smile was totally false. It did t take much further questioning to realize that this woman Felt betrayed by and furious at her children. The smile was merely an unconvincing Way of trying to conceal her bitterness. It would have been far better had she at some time in her life confronted her children and herself directly and turned the anger to its appropriate source. The Reader from Buffalo says in her letter my advice for the angry person is a two mile hike in the pouring rain with no meal on his return Home and a Good kick in the seat of the pants when he gets  there is a Good Deal of solid Wisdom in that prescription but unfortunately it does t work for Many cases of serious chronically suppressed anger. In those cases the Only genuine cure aside from psychotherapy is to let the offending person know what is bothering you. Frequently the offender has t even known that he or she was making you angry and an adjust ment in lifestyle May be enough to restore relative Harmony. Incidentally my children Are just As unhappy As i am. A lot is written about the Mother who has to go it alone be cause she has been deserted or the husband in t interested enough to keep up his responsibilities. How about the father who works hard to keep up his sup port payment and spends As much time As possible with his children but is forced to accept the fact that his children have to watch their Mother live with an other Man without Benefit of marriage weekend father dear dad Here s your letter and i Hope thousands of judges see it and remember you when they make future decisions.
