A courageous and skipper Ted Turner took a Lead of More than a minute on the first leg As Australia struggled with an ill chosen Mainsail then held on to win the first race of the America s cup final series tuesday. Australia the new 12-meter yacht skippered by Noel Robins crossed the starting line 12 seconds in the Lead but saw that advantage disappear when she tried to re trim a sail that was designed for heavier seas than existed on Rhode Island sound. We thought there would be More chop than there actually was said Robins and our Headsail was not tight winded  Robins tried to Force courageous into a tacking Duel on the first leg. However the two boats split tacks sailed out to opposite sides of the course with Turner to the West and Australia found herself wast ing nearly a minute in meaningless tacks. We tacked Early said Robins when we probably should t  afterwards Turner said his Crew made four Jib changes during the race. Almost exactly 27 years ago sept. 16, 1950 Ford then a cocky 21-year-old Rookie pitched the Yankees to a crucial 8-1 Victory Over the second place Detroit tigers for his seventh straight Victory Down the stretch after being called up in mid season to bolster the club s front line pitching. The Hall of Fame Southpaw wound up 9-1 that year with a 2.81 earned run average and seven Complete games. I said before the game that if Guidry had his stuff he would take the bats right out of their hands said Yankees manager Billy Martin. He has a lot of guts which is the Mark of a Good  Ford who watched the game from the broadcasting Booth laughed when asked if Guidry a second year Man reminded him of himself As a Rookie. This kid is a lot faster than i Ever was said Ford. I worked with him in Spring training trying to get him to turn the Ball Over More. I also tried to help him with his other pitches besides the fastball. I told him there would be Days he would t have that Good fastball although he sure uses it Well like tonight when he blew Butch Hobson out of there on three straight pitches for the final out in the  Yankee coach Yogi Berra Ford s Long time Battery mate cited Guidry s Cool under fire. Carl Yastrzemski led off the inning with a triple off the right Center Field Fence and scored the first run when Guidry uncorked a wild pitch with one out. Guidry then walked Carlton Fisk and George Scott in succession and Butch Hobson followed with a single to left that scored Fisk. The rib was the 100th of the season for Hobson. Rookie Mike Paxton started for the red sox and blanked the Yankees for the first three innings. But new York pushed across a run in the fourth on a single by Thurman Munson a fielder s Choice and singles by Graig Nettles and Lou Piniella. The Yankees then chased Paxton in the fifth As they put together four hits to score three runs. Bucky Dent started the rally by looping a single to Center and Rivers Fol Lowed with a line drive Home run his Lith into the right Field stands to put the Yan continued on Page 23
