European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 28, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday March 28, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 11 Ann Landers some Good and some not so Good anti terrorist tips a recent edition of stars and stripes carried an article concerning efforts by the Marine corps to educate its person Nel in anti terrorist Security procedures. The article contained some excellent suggestions whose implementation would considerably enhance personal Security. However the article contained the statement the Marine corps. Preaches a conclusion that officers con cede is a regrettable sign of the times vigilance Means forgetting the american emphasis mine. That approach could seriously hinder the Security program. Simply Security advice that significantly interrupts one s lifestyle will eventually be ignored. The article quotes the Marine Security program As listing among other things the following Security tips avoid Riding elevators. Avoid using Public transportation. Drive an inconspicuous vehicle. Do not stay in hotel rooms located on the first i assure you Over time personnel will uniformly ignore such suggestions. Most serious offering impractical Security tips will discredit an otherwise excellent Gram and Call into question the qualifications of Security professionals. A Security professional must first understand that he will never change human nature. Although maybe unfortunate Low risk personnel cannot be persuaded to change their lifestyles dramatically. It is a professional s Job to working within the restrictions of human nature provide realistic and practical Security advice. That task alone is difficult enough. The article quotes a Marine spokesman As saying the objectives of the Security Effort Are to. Provide realistic and Complete training and if so i recommend suggestions such As not Riding elevators or Public transportation be altered. Those suggestions could be replaced for instance with recommendations like disrupt patterns by walking up Down a floor or two before boarding an elevator exit elevators at other than your Desti nation floor and walk up or Down As required. Public transportation is Safe providing one not set predictable patterns of times and indeed always forgoing Public for Pri vate transportation and always walking to your floor sets the very Type of pattern that Security personnel should strive to eliminate. The Marine corps is to be saluted for its initiative in providing anti terrorist Security tips to its personnel. The corps must however be careful to provide advice that can be incorporated into a nor Mal lifestyle and that does not replace one set of patterns with another. William t. This family is living off Post and paying rent and utilities out of the service member s paycheck let s say the spouse stays Home to care for the children. Suppose rent costs 600 do a month and utilities average 250 do a month. At the rate of 2.60 do per Dollar rent and utilities would Cost $326.92. At 2.00 do per Dollar rent and utilities would Cost $425. At 1.70 do per Dollar this service member and his or her family would be paying $500 for rent and utilities. The picture becomes More and More dismal each time the Dollar drops. The financial fat cat leaders in our nation s capital better Wake up and smell the burning Coffee. With the further decline of the Dollar comes rising inflation in the United states. That s not something i d want to return to after our tour is up. I extend a Hearty invitation to All Finan Cial bureaucrat leaders to come Over Here and live with their families for a year on the meager salary of an e-2 or e-3 in the heart of some Large German City and have to pay rent and utilities with those few and pre Cious dollars. Barbara Czepyha bad sibling Germany student Loans pay off writer says i agree that the Federal deficit is a serious problem. However a recent letter which at tempted to educate us about the reasons for the deficit contained unfortunate factual errors. The writer implied that student loan programs Are totally unproductive and should be abolished. Although i would like to see major changes in the student loan programs to reduce costs and to increase repayments i believe that student Loans produce More for our society than they Cost. Some students both undergraduate and graduate students Are improving our lives while studying for their degrees. Agricultural students Are working in the Fields and labs to develop better plants and less costly ways to grow them. Biology Stu dents use Gene splicing to discover the causes of diseases and their cures. Psychology social work and nursing Stu dents As part of their training provide serv ices for a hospitals nursing Homes Community mental health centers and Many family to Rescue on March 14 my Friend and i broke Down on the autobahn near Glan Muench Weiler. My Van was on fire and needless to say we were quite upset. Being wives of infantry soldiers we have often complained to each other about How much our husbands Are away and How Many problems we have with military life in general but our Faith has been restored it really is like a big family someone always seems to come through for you when you need them most two very Nice gentlemen soldiers stopped put out the fire at some bodily risk i might add and took me to a phone. I do not know their names but they know who they Are. We my Friend and i would like to thank them again for their help time and patience. Mrs. Linda Hale mrs. Launda Wilkes Baum older Germany other facilities. Engineering and chemistry students Are experimenting with new materials which May soon be used in military and space hardware. Computer science students Are writing new programs that help us solve problems faster and better. These Are Only a few examples students in other majors make similarly important contributions. Most of these students will never receive any Money for these services and their inventions. Some students undoubtedly abuse their Edu cation Loans by spending the Money on parties Beer stereos and vacations and by not repaying their Loans. But some students will produce More while they Are students on government Loans than the abusers will waste. Other students who receive education Loans will produce Only the knowledge and skills needed for successful careers. The students who merely learn without producing while in school will produce after College by paying higher taxes and having productive careers. Further i can Only conclude that the pre Vious letter writer is either misinformed or irresponsible in wanting to dismantle every Public program social welfare Bureau every Regula Tion on Trade and the Economy and every for eign Aid program. Most of these need to be changed and some abolished but not All of them need to be abolished. Finally the form of government in the United states is not socialism and we do not have the world s highest Standard of living. Western european countries which Are closer to being socialist coun tries do not have National debt problems nearly As severe As ours while providing Many More welfare and Public services than the United states. Before you try to make social Grams regulations etc., the scapegoats for our Federal deficit think More care fully and thoroughly. Easy answers do not exist for hard problems and no effective answers can be found for incorrectly identified problems. Gregory h. Wilmoth Bamberg Germany dear Ann Landers when i first got my Driver s License my Mother made me sit Down and read an article you printed. It was about a teen Ager who was killed in a car Accident. If you can find that column please rerun it for my 16 year old brother who is getting his License soon. The article made me Stop and think about the responsibility of handling a car. I am now 21 and have never had an Accident. I m sure that column had a lot to do with my safety re Cord. . Flint Mich. Dear . Thanks for asking. I Hope that column serves your brother As Well As it served you. Dead at 17 agony claws my mind. I am a statistic. When i first got Here i Felt i was very much alone. I was overwhelmed by grief and i expected to find sympathy. I found no sympathy. I saw Only thou Sands of others whose bodies were As badly mangled As mine. I was Given a number and placed in a category. The category was called traffic the Day i died was an Ordinary school Day. How i wish i had taken the bus but i was too Cool for the bus. I remember How i wheeled the car out of mom. Special favor i pleaded. All the kids when the 2 50 . Bell rang i threw my books in the locker. Free until tomorrow morning i ran to the parking lot excited at the thought of driving a car and being my own Boss. It does t matter How the Accident happened. I was goofing off going too fast taking crazy chances. But i was enjoying my Freedom and having fun. The last thing i remember was passing an old lady who seemed to be going awfully slow. I heard a crash and Felt a terrific Jolt. Glass and steel flew everywhere. My whole body seemed to be turning inside out. I heard myself scream. Suddenly i awakened. It was very quiet. A police officer was standing Over me. I saw a doctor. My body was mangled. I was saturated with blood. Pieces of jagged Glass were sticking out All Over. Strange that i could t feel anything. Hey Don t pull that Sheet Over my head. I can t be dead. I m Only 17. I be got a Date tonight. I m supposed to have a wonderful life ahead of me. I Haven t lived yet. I can t be dead. Later i was placed in a drawer. My folks came to identify me. Why did they have to see me like this Why did i have to look at mom s eyes when she faced the most Terri ble ordeal of her life dad suddenly looked very old. He told the Man in charge yes he is our the funeral was weird. I saw All my relatives and friends walk toward the Cas Ket. They looked at me with the Saddest eyes i be Ever seen. Some of my buddies were crying. A few of the girls touched my hand and sobbed As they walked by. Please somebody Wake me up get me out of Here. I can t Bear to see mom and dad in such pain. My grandparents Are so weak from grief they can barely walk. My brother and sister Are like zombies. They move like robots. In a Daze. Everybody. No one can believe this. I can t believe it either. Please Don t Bury me i m not dead i have a lot of living to do i want to laugh and run again. I want to sing and dance. Please Don t put me in the ground i prom ise if you give me just one More Chance god i la be the most careful Driver in the whole world. All i want is one More Chance. Please god i m Only 17.
