European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 24, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday april 24, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 21 prep pickings last week the prep show went on the show must go on despite the threat of possible terrorism which forced last minute changes Dodds Germany sports were for the most part successfully staged last weekend. This week saw another threat in the Banning of All non official duty train travel to Berlin. I thought that the prep schedule might be adversely affected. But when i talked with Dodds i was told that such activity is considered official and the events will be held As scheduled. Only 10 of the 34 schools in Germany Bennor scheduled for track and Field failed to make it to the ovals saturday four of them Pitburg Karlsruhe Frankfurt International school and Host Mannheim were scheduled for the same meet. Stuttgart was scheduled at Mannheim too but the stallions were Able to Hook on at Ulm. Wiesbaden and accent were listed at Frankfurt but they switched to Ramstein and Bonn respectively. Baum older also made a switch from Hahn to Ramstein which in itself was a switch. The meet originally was scheduled for Zwic Bruecken but the site was changed because Ramstein is a fenced in facility. Frankfurt Giessen Hanau Pitburg bad Kreuz Nach Hahn and Fulda did t get to compete. And there were some sparkling performances recorded so Early in the season. Baum older s Rick Jaster turned in a 4 02.9 clocking in the 1,500 and his 8 54 8 was second to Nuernberg s Carsten Schillack in the 3,000. Schillack hit the tape in 8 52.6. The Dodds records in the 1,500 and 3,000 Are 3 57.7 and 8 48.3 respectively. With improved weather As the season advances those Marks Aren t out of reach especially if a Jaster Schillack Duel develops Down the line. Owci Bruecken s Steve Moore and accent s Liz Wilson Are the big leaders with season bests in three events As the first edition of the 1986 is Honor Rol unfurls see Page 20. Moore sets the Pace in the 100 10.9200 22.5 and Long jump 22-6/2 and Wilson owns the top Rune in the 800 2 22.31,500 4 50.4 and 3,000 10 59.0 the respective girls records in the 800 and 1,500 arc 2 17.6 and 4 40.4. With some Good Competition those records arc within Wilson s reach. What might really Hurt her would be her inability to go to the Central i i Urx an championships. As of now the of. Thank you. _ three soccer games went by the boards last saturday. I Frankfurt was scheduled at Stuttgart Fulda was listed a. Karlsruhe and Hanau was supposed to go to Pitburg. Vav e had a report Friday that the osterholz at Ansbach i amps were postponed but they were played As scheduled. Ben Abrams nov ref tuesday no arrangements were made by Odds Germany sports officials for makeup games. When i picked up last thursday s paper and read a s " w3s pleasant y surprised to learn of the addition of the 10-team soccer tournament that has been scheduled by the London boosters club. It comes into that not sanctioned by Dodds category but it should give Italy teams the Opportunity they have been clamouring for Over the past several years to prove their Mettle against most of the rest of the Dodds world. I say most of the rest of the Dodds world because the top clubs from Germany probably will be missing because the beginning of the London Competition conflicts with the Germany big school and Small school playoffs May 23-24. The big schools match the Best Germany aaa and a teams against each other. The Small schools arrangement has lost some of its stature because the Bennor Champion which advanced to the playoffs in 1985, in t scheduled to compete this year. Postseason play won t be funded by Dodds at lactic which has been hit drastically by the Gramm rude Nan a. The Bennor Champion would be an idea candidate for the London invitational. As stated last week players on the 10 tourney teams will have to make their own arrangements for transportation to High Wycombe. Once there accommodations will be provided for team members and coaches. Entry deadline is May 1. All interested people should Contact Pat Reynolds at High Wycombe civilian 455263 or at Auto on 223-5263 during office hours or at his Home at Beaconsfield civilian 77355 after 7 p m in land time. i the following note and Lei or from Ger Aldine Saran regarding tin Naples invitational wrestling i i a Noil air or. A brains my family s interest in win Liny we of Lowed your a or i with special interest o the Naples to ulnar . Attached is a copy of a hiter 1 Sci to Dodds a director Jerald Bloom. Have not received a the letter dear or. Bloom this letter concerns Dodds position on the recent wrestling tournament in Naples. From my family s past experiences know that Dodds is very much against having students participate such events. A few years ago when 1 funded my sons trip to Athens for a similar wrestling tournament or. George Gundacker Ankara principal explained Dodds position to me and to other parents who also arranged and paid for their sons trip expenses. There is a relationship Between those who strive to Excel in sports and those who Are successful in life. I suspect some students want to do Well in sports mainly for the recognition it provides. If a student works hard whatever the motivation it s a positive and healthy thing. If a student wants recognition and deserves it let s take the human approach and give it to him. Sup port him. Competition should be encouraged in sports As Well As in the classroom and in the business world sports teaches discipline getting along with others and most of the other qualities one needs in life. Dodds narrow position Recks of a dark age mentality. Even though i have had High school leaching experience i frankly never fully understood How important sports is to certain competitive individuals until my own children were old enough to become involved in sports. I wish someone in Dodds could comprehend this. Last Spring during a pts sponsored series of meetings Many Ankara people teachers parents students and other individuals expressed their Opin ions on Dodds attitude toward sports. Many people Felt there was a real Lack of spirit encouragement and enthusiasm about the sports programs even though tur key schools offer a Choice of four or five sports per school year. There s a big difference Between the sched uling and staging a sports program and in supporting that program 100 percent. During those meetings i discussed my family s personal views toward the sports programs with mrs. Carol self who has done an out standing Job the past two years As Ankara s athletic director. I know she passed those views on locally i Don t know if any of them filtered up to Dodds Mediterranean. If a student is in Good academic standing and is a hard working athlete and is willing to spend his time and hard earned Money for a trip to a tournament like that one in Naples that student should be encouraged. Mow in the world can you say that an absence from school will be unix Cusco in that situation ironically school was cancelled March 6 and 7 because of a teach ers workshop and the Turkey wide music festival in an Kara winning laurels at Mcm a sports Evanl i lit assist a til with a at ii Eric Seho Aini to. The Benefit of such tournaments far outweigh the disadvantages. "1 Trust that for future similar events dodos Mediterranean will take a More positive humanistic thank you mrs. Saran for such an interesting View Point. Tho stars and stripes up photo Leon Bip Roberts. I m so frustrated Cincinnati a Rookie Leon Bip Roberts the san Diego padres big Hope for Speed in the lineup wants to do everything he can to help the club. But he has to reach base first and that s proved to be a problem. Roberts who made the jump from class a to the majors this Spring is still looking for his first hit and stolen base in the big leagues. I m trying to keep my Chin up. But it s just real Tough said Roberts who was drafted by san Diego during the Winter from the Pittsburgh organization. I m so frustrated. I be tried everything to get my Bat going. I want to help this team. It s tearing me Roberts 22, has played in nine of the padres 14 games. He s o-for-16 at the plate including seven strikeouts. He was caught in his Only two steal attempts. The padres tuesday game against the reds in Cincinnati was postponed because j of cold weather. Roberts who stole 90 bases his last two years in the minors won a spot on the padres roster in the Hope he might provide the Lead off spark and Speed san Diego has missed since Alan Wiggins was traded last year. Wiggins was traded to Baltimore Fol lowing a relapse of his cocaine dependency. But it s never easy for a Rookie especially one trying to make the jump from class a. Usually players spend at least a year at the class aaa level Honing their skill for the majors. I feel for Bip and i try and talk to him said Tim Flannery who has shared second base duty with Roberts. He s just got to keep his head up and keep battling. In this game when you re going bad opponents will try and Bury you. You need some Success right off the Bat or things can Roberts a switch hitter who has started Only against left handers so far this season says he s been through a slump like this before. But i was hitting from both sides of the plate so it was easier to break out fit he said. Manager Steve Boros has had Flannery and Roberts operating in what appears to be a platoon situation with Flannery play ing against right handers and Robert against left handers. But it s not really a platoon situation said Boros. At the outset i wanted to make that Clear so i would t lock myself in to that arrangement. What counts is results. And i want to be Able to go either Way. I said All along whoever does the Best Job of sparking the club getting on base and helping us get some wins will play. And i Haven t made up my mind yet. But we be just got to get some results from that Lead off so far this season san Diego Lead off men have scored Only four runs and stolen no bases. Boros said he has Given some thought to moving right fielder Tony Gwynn to the Lead off spot. Gwynn currently bats second
