Boom an s Emerald Forest a jewel of a film by Christopher Wienandt staff writer the Stone age is not Over. It lives on in the South Pacific and in the rain forests of the Amazon Basin in South America where tribes still live that have never seen a White Man that Hunt with Spears and with bows and arrows that practice the rites of passage handed Down through countless Ages. This is the setting of the Emerald Forest John Boorman s account of the Jolt that occurs when Stone age meets modern age. It s an adventure tragedy in which a Young boy Tommy Boorman s son Charley is captured from his parents to grow up among a Stone age civilization called the invisible people. While his father a hydroelectric Engineer Powers Booth spends 10 years looking for him the boy is transformed from the american Tommy to the Blond Blue eyed Indian Warrior Tomme. Eventually the father wounded by a Cannibal while on yet another search is saved by a Young Brave of the invisible people a Blond haired Brave. The boy knows the Man but not As his father. His father is the tribe s chief. The Man he rescues is a creature of his dreams Djaddeh. To Meh is fascinated by this strange character but the chief knows that his visit can bring nothing but trouble trouble that threatens to destroy the entire tribe. Just As the White explorers brought unheard of diseases to the new world the Engineer s appearance brings with it the infection of civilization. The fierce people inadvertently introduced to guns by the Engineer equip themselves to wipe out the invisible people. They kill the chief and most of the other men in the tribe and sell the women to a night club owner to pay for the guns. Young Tomme enlists the Aid of Djaddeh who has come to understand that the innocence of these people is beyond Price. Djaddeh does manage to Rescue the women and save the tribe from destruction but Only at the Cost of the huge dam he has spent a decade building deep in the rain Forest. The Emerald Forest is a Beautiful haunting film skilfully made and skilfully acted. The scenes detailing the daily life of these obscure indians Are fascinating the Healing of the Medicine Man the rite of passage through which Tomme goes As he comes of age the ritual of tribal courtship. Much of the script is spoken in Indian dialects with subtitles. Yes it is Beautiful but Boorman s message is suspect. Perhaps it is True that a primitive society infected with the virus of civilization must perish. But Boorman also implies that anything having to do with civilization is poisoned. If that is True the entire fabric of civilization is rotted and worthless and we All might As Well go Back to the Jungle. Still the film is full of remarkable performances boothes Boorman a and those of dozens of indians who performed in the film. And whether you subscribe to its message or not it is moving and definitely out of the Ordinary. The Emerald Forest is available on videotape.
