European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 24, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 22 the stars and stripes thursday april 24, 1986 wrest no brings smile of an viewer dear editor after having to endure endless hours of football base Ball and basketball an has come through again. How by putting All american wrestling on to. I have been a wrestling fan since i was a child and have missed the excitement wrestling brings since i have been in Germany. Now i can look Forward to saturday afternoon so i can watch a sport i truly enjoy. So May i say a great big thanks to an for making a lot of wrestling fans Happy. Keep up the Good work. Patricia Munib Schwa Ebisch Hall Germany players should pay their dues dear editor for years average americans have stood Back and watched As professional sports players demanded Mil Lions of dollars for their services. Granted superstars Are valuable to their teams but no one is worthy of million Dollar plus salaries. The list of players earning a million or Over per year is big enough to cover All the pages of the stars and stripes. To top it off. Wade Boggs of the Boston red sox is mad because he will Only get paid $1.35 million for this year. Kansas City Pitcher Bret Saberhagen got a 600 percent raise this year Keith Hernandez is mad because he will lose 10 percent of his $1.35 million this year because he used drugs. Which brings me to the Point of this letter it s hard to believe that an average ballplayer in the sports world makes More Money in one year than the president of the United states. They Don t have to worry about Balanc ing the budget but the president does. I propose a new from Page 19 worry about the fans but to concentrate on the Foster went into monday night s game against Pittsburgh with a .273 batting aver age but he had Only three Bis and one extra base hit a double and had failed in several key situations. Foster has been severely booed at Shea stadium. It s a situation where they re not really booing the player but his performance Foster said. After a couple of years i be realized that. Now it s just a matter of me getting ready to although Johnson says he has no intentions of Plato Ning Foster in left Field the performance of a couple of Reserve players Over the weekend planted the seeds of doubt. Rookie Kevin Mitchell had two hits including a double and drove in a run in new York s 3-2 Victory Over Philadelphia saturday. Danny Heep hit a three run Homer to ignite sunday s Victory. I m not worried about anything Foster said. Whatever Job they want me to do i la prepare for that. Right now i still plan on playing regularly by that i mean 130 to 140 Foster spent several of his formative years in the major leagues As a part time player. He did not become a full timer with the Cincinnati reds until Pete Rose moved from left Field to third in 1975. Even Heep a left handed hitter conceded that he probably would be used Only against particularly Tough right handed hitters and to give Foster an occasional rest. Foster often sits out Day games after night games. You be got to feel for George Heep said. The booing effects anybody. What Ever you do is not enough. George can hit two Home runs and if he strikes out his final time at Bat he gets booed. We All pull for him he added. The fans have got to understand we re All under a lot of pressure Foster says he sees two sides to the fans. I can t be concerned with the reaction of the fans Foster said. My Job is to go out there and get hits in key situations. When i got a hit the other night the fans showed their appreciation. There Are fans out there backing me. I be got to keep a positive no Law go into effect. Sports figures convicted of drug use pay 50 percent of their salaries into the defense budget plus enlist into the service after their playing Days Are Over so they can work for a living. Also the following list of fines should be incorporated in sports and also go into the budget baseball strikeout $100. Error $200. Football Fumble $200. Interception $200. Basketball missed shot $100. Missed foul shot$200. Hockey penalty $200. Fighting penalty $500. A funny thing is that these players demand millions when they have a great year but can you remember the last time a player offered to pay Back Money when he had a bad year Steve Carlton last year got paid Over $1.4 million and Only won one game All year. He sure did t offer any Money Back to the team. That Money sure could help the budget. Soon the american Public will have to take out Loans to go to Ball games. After All they re the ones paying these High salaries. Staff sgt. Don Stebbins Hahn a Germany girls should get their kicks dear editor having attended an american High school in Ger Many and now being stationed with the air Force in England i have read the stars and stripes for almost six years. One of the columns that i always read is Ben Abrams prep Pickin s so i can keep in touch with the Dodds sports programs Here in Europe of which i Aman avid supporter. In the years that i have read or. Abrams column i Don t think i have Ever agreed with him More than i did when i read a. Recent prep pickins in which he questioned Dodds Mediterranean s apparent policy contradictions in allowing girls to play on a boys football team but not a boys soccer team. I played both football and soccer in High school and i agree with or. Abrams assessment of the relative Dan Gers of football and soccer. One of the objectives of football is to Knock your opponent Down in order to More easily meet the other objectives to score a touchdown or regain Possession of the Ball. There is no possible Way to play tackle football without making Contact and usually very hard Contact. I would venture to say that 80 percent of that Contact is directed at the Chest. Soccer on the other hand is a sport in which the main objective is to avoid your opponents so that you May kick a Ball into a goal. I will not deny that there is Contact involved in soccer or that Contact is potentially dangerous. However the Contact in soccer is usually two legs hitting together or bumping shoulders. The Pri Mary Point of Contact in soccer is not an area that is very susceptible to major damage to a girl As the Chest is in football. In summary my viewpoint is that girls should not be allowed to play on a boys full Contact football team but should be allowed to play on a boys soccer team unless there is a girls soccer team already available. I know that there Are Many people who will oppose me in this and that s Fine. If anyone can convince me that there is no More danger to girls playing football than there is to boys i will change my thinking. Until then though this is where i stand. Randall j.
