European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - July 21, 1988, Darmstadt, Hesse Page the stars and stripes . Rosenthal for the democrats Jackson has come to stay Jesse Jackson will not go away. He is not going away during the Conven Tion and has no plans at All to go to the Back of the bus when it ends. He intends to be right there in Ameri can politics More and More prominently for years and years. The Man came to dinner in the demo cratic House and decided to unpack. Then he invited some of his friends to come on in millions and millions of them. The other Day he talked to his supporters about other democrats what they Are worried about is not a threat that we Are going to pull out of the convention but the threat that we Are going to everybody in the room laughed with pleasure. They All know something that gov. Michael Dukakis and other democrats seem to have a hard time understand ing. Jackson has not just been running for National office a one shot win or lose proposition but for National leadership a Campaign without end. He sees himself As the one real National politician before during and Between campaigns with goals of his own that last after election Day. He has a Large Loving person Al constituency that will be Loyal to him no matter who sits in the White House. During the Campaign most democratic candidates treated him As if he were invisible or at least inaudible. They refused to Challenge some of his positions they thought dangerous defense the Middle East Israel taxes. They treated him with an unctuous politeness that oozed condescension. Then on the eve of the convention Dukakis showed that he and his aides still did not understand that Jackson was different from All the other democratic sex Candi dates with whom they tried to Lump him. They did not understand that Jackson s achievement in becoming the first major Black National candidate made him a historic figure and a Pride to the 7 million Ameri cans who had voted for him in the primaries and to their children. By bumbling the notification about the vice presidential Choice they insulted Jack William f. Buckley \ a font to it son s constituency and handed him a grievance that he is playing As Isaac Stern plays the violin. They Are beginning to face the reality that they will have to give him much of what he has said All along that he is entitled to the fruit of his accomplishment. That is not one thing but a variety enough jobs for his aides enough participation for them and for him in policy making to help him keep a National role alive and growing. He does not want so much that it would tie him too tightly to Dukakis. Jackson s emotional hold Over his followers might not be so deep if he walked behind another Man. Jackson believes he is something special in american politics and he is. He has made some of his passions come have and resonate with political Power the Battle against drugs child care better housing for the poor. He has shown compassion for the outcast and the sick. Most important his words his manner and his Rise bring inspiration and happiness to millions of americans who have too Little of either. But he is also a Fountain of demagogic rhetoric. He can turn passion in himself and his followers off and on with a twist of his emotional faucet. He prides himself on reaching out to cubans koreans mexicans just about every body but has never found it in him to reach out so eagerly to jews. A great Many Ameri can jews fear him and also quite correctly believe that his warmth for the Plo can be a livid danger to Israel. The idea of Jackson in command of National defense or relations with nato or having to face some of the brutal corrupt third world rulers for whom he has a taste May bring on More heart attacks than cholesterol. Some Day other Black leaders May Rise to Challenge Jackson. He won t obligingly go away for them either. Those americans whom he unnerves must Deal with him and with his sup porters to change them persuade them or fight them. To Deal effectively with Jackson As Friend or foe Means understanding what he is a different kind of politician dear to millions an american reality. No matter who wins on the first tues Day after the first monday in november Jackson will be off campaigning on wednesday. New York times i i in i. Pat Buchanan put it to him that this was the most concentrated pack of lies about the soviet Union in one package since a broadcast by Goebbels on the jews. His answer i wanted to go Over there and paint a Beautiful portrait of the soviet pressed to explain the distortions he just said it again. Well that s True that s absolutely True we went Over there to paint a portrait we painted a portrait and i m not going to apologize for the wonderful irony is that when this Beautiful portrait of the soviet Union was exhibited in the soviet Union the soviet government ran a disclaimer criticizing the program for failing to describe the harsh realities of the soviet Union. This was All too much for l. Jirasek s position is that whatever is told inadequately by the movie gets corrected by educational Reading matter that accompanies it.
