European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 27, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse The stars and stripes a Page 11 letters a soldiers offer ideas on cutting troop Sanh Landers dear Ann Landers i would like to know How you and your readers feel about couples showering together. Is there a lot of this going on after 20 years of a fairly Good marriage showering together has become a major Bone of Contention. My husband watches More to than i do. He tells me that he has seen dozens of couples in the Shower together and they seem to be having a wonderful time. A a Henry thinks i am completely out of sync because the few times we tried showering together i did no to care for it at All. We have a Standard size tub with a Shower. There is no room for anything larger. We Are both average size people. When Hemy and i Shower together he gets the warm water and i get the Damp steam. Frankly i do not think there is anything sexy about this sort of togetherness. I have always looked Forward to a warm Bath As a wonderful Opportunity to relax at the end of a hectic Day. I love the Solitude and done to need any company when pm in the tub. Also showers wreck my hair. Am 1 alone in this and please Ann one More thing i already changed a a Henry so name so done to change it to something else or you just might hit his real name and he would kill me. A All wet in Binghamton , dear wet pm a tub girl myself. In fact its one of my favorite places to read the mail. If Henry enjoys showering with you be a Good sport and go along with it. You can take a Bath later. The least Henry can do however is change places once in a while so you get the hot water and he gets the steam. How about it readers if you be tried it did you like it if not Why not dear Ann Landers the concept of legalizing drugs is seriously flawed and in a glad you came out against it. Consider the following different drugs cause different reactions. No longer do drug users just nod off in a harmless manner. Now they often choose drugs that create intense activity resulting in violence. Even legalized controlled sales of these drugs would be extremely dangerous to society. If drugs Are legalized who is going to work where is the Money going to come from to support All the people who arc on drugs and can team a living arc they All going to be on welfare is it fair to expect the taxpayer to assume financial responsibility for these individuals another consideration if drugs Are legalized a who will Monitor their usage will everyone take a daily drug test one that provides immediate results before going to work As an airline Pilot train Engineer Auto Assembly line worker bus Driver surgeon teacher or police officer a stoned Pilot an impaired medical worker or a defective product could be fatal. Legalizing drugs is not a solution Ann. It would create a whole new set of problems for a society that is struggling to find solutions for the old ones. ?., Middletown Calif. Dear . I agree and after a great Deal of discussion very few Public figures Are now speaking out in favor of legalization. The real question is Why Are millions of people so unhappy so bored so unfulfilled that they Are willing to drink snort inject or inhale any substance that might blot out reality and give them a bit of temporary Relief any answers out there Gem of the Day keep your temper. Nobody else wants it. Creators Syndicate this letter is in regards to the proposal of cutting soldiers with three to five years in service i made e-5 in 3l/i years and am going to Basic no course in september. But All of this is a waste if i or soldiers like me get the Boot while they re in their prime. This would be a big mistake for the army to kick this group of soldiers out. There Are plenty of soldiers out there that done to want to be Here. I say hold a mass formation and everyone that wants out Tell them to fall out. I guarantee that Congress would meet its quota in about four hours. I say let the soldiers out that done to want to be Here. The Job would be better for you spend All your time Hunting Down the personnel that done to want to be around. You would get More Pride in the work that is done instead of people doing it Halfway because they had to do something. I encourage All soldiers like myself to write their congressmen and let them know that if they hit the three to five year group of soldiers be making a big mistake. For Why would a person enter the army knowing he would be kicked out in three to five years you can be guaranteed a Job at Mcdonald s for longer than that. A set. Otis l. Pugh Kitzinger West Germany in Light of future budgetary constraints now is the time for soldiers to seriously reconsider their future role in the armed services. The demise of the Warsaw pact has effectively eliminated the need for a Large . Occupation Force within the european Borders and lasting peace May be on the horizon. Where does the Soldier enter this Complex world. I would like to know Why we arc encouraged to use coupons at the commissary then if we happen to have one that gives us extra value they will not accept it this is the situation i had a Coupon for a free Carton of Cool whip when 1 bought the 39-Ouncc Maxwell Coffee. I happened to gel a can of Coffee that had a 75cent Coupon attached. After hearing on an and other sources about taking advantage of extra savings at the commissary i gave my coupons to the cashier. She told me that i could Only use one Coupon either for the Cool whip or for the 75 cents. Why i could understand if it was another cents off Coupon but this was for another product. The fact that i had bought the product the Coffee at a time that it had a cents off Coupon attached seems to me unrelated except to give me a better value. If this is the Case Why Are we told to take advantage of special prices when our coupons wont be Good at least that seems to be the same thing to me. A mrs. Tom Morris Schweinfurt West Germany editors note a col. Paul w. Phillips commander . Army troop support Agency replies we Are glad that you use coupons when you shop in your commissary but Are sorry to Tell you that usually not More than one Coupon can be used for a single item. If you read the Fine print on a Coupon it usually says a limit a one Coupon per the Coupon you simply manpower in the military is expendable. It is generally accepted by military leadership that Large scale military conflicts such As world War i and world War ii and the Vietnam War will practically be nonexistent. Our Force is going to be tailored for guerrilla Type actions. High technology and push Button warfare has essentially eliminated the need for the fool Soldier. Our military leaders try to quell our apprehension toward the future. However action Speaks louder than words. Already we have seen inconsistencies in Dod policy regarding personnel programs. As reported in the army times sen. Sam Nunn d-ga., chairman of the Senate armed services committee states that the defense department proposal to use funds for the military personnel reprogramming to pay for the Panama Nicaragua and refugee assistance a raises real questions in my mind about what is really important to the defense soldiers should be aware that they Are part of a political ballgame in which ultimately they will become the losers despite reassurances by our leaders. It is imperative that All soldiers evaluate their skills experience and civilian education to determine where those assets will Best serve them whether in the military or the civilian sector. Some of us Are fortunate enough to have technical skills that Are in demand whereas the infantryman or artillerymen will have great difficulty in the civilian marketplace. Its Paramount that soldiers especially the Young no or lower enlisted Lake full advantage of benefits that the military offers even if it does mean juggling work schedules and time with the family. One of the army s mottos is Quot be now is the time for the Soldier to prepare for a possible transition to a life without the military. A staff sgt Leonard a. Walker shape Belgium sent us contained that statement so the cashier was Correct in informing you that you could use Only one Coupon on the can of Coffee. You May ask then How is it that some supermarkets in the states allow you to use double coupons for items in these cases the supermarkets do not receive a redemption from the manufacturer of the product for the second Coupon but actually take it out of their own budget in order to encourage you to shop at their store. Unfortunately we cannot do this in the commissary since our budget will not allow it. When we redeem our coupons with the manufacturer we must be Able to show that we sold the amount of merchandise that the coupons represent. On rare occasions sales representatives have offered double coupons in our commissaries on selected products but again they must approve this and agree to reimburse us. We Hope that you understand and will continue to redeem your coupons in our commissaries. Not Only do they save you Money but the commissary system earns 8 cents in handling fees for each Coupon redeemed. Thank you for writing and enabling us to clarify this Issue for you.
