European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 27, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Stateside View keep volume Down As change speeds up Charles Osgood Tribune med a with the exception of american communists of whom there arc apparently still a diehard few everybody in the United states is thrilled to death about the recent political developments in the soviet Union and the rest of Eastern Europe darned if it does no to turn out that the a a people hated living in the a a people a what they want is what we be got. And we be got a lot More of just about everything. You can t blame us for taking some satisfaction in this although gloating is never a very Good idea tempting As it May be. But we do Hope that when the dust settles in that part of the world there really will be More Freedom and democracy there than those poor people have Ever known. I say a poor people Quot advisedly. Does Freedom and democracy automatically mean More economic Prosperity not necessarily. Certainly not right away. And among the things that we be got that they want Are better food better clothing better shelter better lives All around. There Are a lot of people in those countries who would be willing to sacrifice some of the Freedom and democracy part if they thought it would Speed up the Prosperity part. We in the a free world wanted people there to be Able to think what they wanted and say what they wanted. After All that a what Freedom is All about. But already it is Clear that what some of those folks Are thinking and saying is not what wed like them to think or say. There Are ancient rivalries and hatreds there now being voiced for the first time in decades. This May seem Petty and ridiculous to us at this distance but in a profound Way it is none of our business. That does no to mean they wont be looking to us for help. They will want us to do some things we May not want to do. And Well want them to do some things they May not want to do. And we Are Likely to get pretty mad at each other. Just because their form of government May be More to our liking it does not follow that the United states and the soviet Union for example will have nothing More to fight about. It s Worth remembering that our differences Are not entirely ideological. It reminds me of an orchestra rehearsal i attended years ago at Tanglewood. Leonard Bernstein was guest conducting the Boston symphony orchestra. They came to a soft passage in the music where the Tempo accelerated. As the musicians played faster and faster they also tended to play a Little bit louder. The Maestro tapped his Baton stopped the music and gently reminded everybody that the composer had marked the passage Quot pianissimo. A faster does not mean louder a he quipped.
