European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 27, 1990, Darmstadt, Hesse Pome front get the right computer for the right Job Jerry Kidder after spending the last several weeks searching through store computer sections and listening to Many expert opinions i still Haven to purchased a new computer. So How can i help you you might ask. In a not really sure but maybe some of the questions in be asked and some of the answers 1 have received will help. This column will consider the base unit the Box that contains All the other parts and some of the factors that need to be considered. My first question to anyone who considering a computer is a what Are you going to do with it a the answer to this simple question sometimes causes people to hem and Haw and shuffle their feet because they done to know. These people Are the most Likely ones to make mistakes mistakes that will Cost Money. Others know exactly what they want to accomplish and need to know How to Best achieve that goal. A Friend once asked me to help set up a computer which he had received As a gift. We set up the system and i showed him How to use the word processor which he had also received and everything was Fine. Several weeks later i asked him How things were going. He told me that he had gotten Down the old Underwood because it was easier and faster. After a White he decided to get a simpler unit. We went through the same operation with the same results. As far As i know his old Underwood is still clacking away. Moral is not everyone needs a computer. For those Only interested in word processing typing letters consider a dedicated word processor with a built in Printer or an electronic typewriter with spell Check or digital display and All the other goodies offered. Otherwise you May find the new computer collecting dust computers in the closet because it is just too complicated or time consuming to use. Those who know what they want Are ready to go shopping. The number salad begins with the selection of the right computer base unit. Do you want an it or an at How about an 80286 or a 80386 or even a 80386sx? Back to the original question of what you want to do with the computer. Many experts have declared the it 8086/8088 Centra processing unit or Chip dead but for word processing and Small databases such As movie lists video tapes addresses of friends and relatives and so on they Are alive and still Selling very Well. They Are Ideal for entry level systems. There Are several differences in the x i category. The original it had a system clock Speed of 4.77 Megahertz. This Means that the cup could perform instructions and functions based on 4.77 million clock ticks per second. Not one instruction per clock tick some instructions take several cycles which in turn takes several ticks simple to understand right that might seem awfully Quick. But for Many applications that have lots of number crunching or graphic displays and the like tins is very slow. Therefore the Turbo it was born fins computer operates 1,5 to 3 limes faster than the original. Here you might see the v20 or v30 Chip listed As the cup. These computers Are still not sult Cieni for lots of applications but Are Fine for letters games the Normal database and Many other functions. For those looking to the future the Choice is even More difficult. The newer generation 80286, 80386 and 80386sx plus the newest 80486 Are not Only faster but also offer a Gateway into the newest operating systems and Multi tasking. They also support More memory another advantage of the 80286/h038<> cup family is the size of Floc data and address paths. This column is too Short to go into bits and bytes but it can offer a Quick explanation. The it can Send 8 bits of information at one time. The 80286 can Send 16 bits of info and the 80386 can Send up to 32 bits. With increased clock Speed and the ability to Send More information at one time the 80386 is about five to 20 times faster than an it Anil about two to six times faster than an 80286. More next time As to continue to assemble our system. A done to forget the Apfel Fesl at the Chi Emsee recreation area june 9-10 for All those Apple users and anyone interested in Apple computers.
