Gratuitous violence has Long since become a redundant phrase when talking about current movies. But Arnold Schwarzenegger takes it to new Heights in his latest action adventure epic total recall. What saves him is the plot which actually is quite interesting. Based on a Short Story by Sci i master Phillip k. Dick the film is set in a future time when Mars is colonized and being ravaged by a despotic businessman named Cohagen Ronny Cox who owns the rights to the valuable Ore beneath the Martian soil and runs the planet wide mining operation with an Iron fist. But before we get to that we meet Doug Quaid Schwarzenegger tue Collar Type with a typically Middle class humdrum life the Only thing troubling him is a recurring dream in which he s on Mars with a Beautiful Brunette. The dream leads him to recall inc., a company that specializes in mind implants that allow people to Purchase the memory of their Ideal vacation and experience it vicariously after the fact. When Quaid agrees to a memory implant of a trip to Mars things Start going haywire. Suddenly has wife Sharon Stone and a band of Cohagen s henchmen led by Michael Ironside Are trying to kill him. Seems his memory was erased at some Point and his whole life Asho had known it was a Complete lie. Apparently Quaid was once Cohagen s right hand Man but defected to a growing rebel Alliance on Mars. Since his memory implant has caused his erased personality to begin resurfacing he s become a liability to Cohagen. Quaid must go to Mars to confront his Nemesis but just when he s about to discover the truth he finds out it May not be the truth at All. Aside from the pleasing intricacies of the plot which director Paul Verhoeven who also did the original Rob Ocop propels Forward with maximum momentum the film has More nifty touches. Industry wizard Rob Bottin s makeup on the mutants particularly a Hooker with unusual anatomical attributes is extraordinary. The special effects Are also great especially a scene in which one character sort of explodes after being exposed to the Low pressure Martian atmosphere. And Arnie keeps his trademark corny humor on a relatively Short Leash for a change. But Back to the violence a let s just say that parents might want to think twice about taking the impressionable younger kiddies a partial hit list in eludes dozens of bodies blasted by automatic weapons fire several handgun shots to the head at extremely close Range a number of Crotch kicks some Larynx crushing and Bone breaking and my fave a lovingly photographed dismemberment during a fight scene that leaves Arnie holding two bloody slumps that once were a bad Guy s arms. But what the hey. Most moviegoers Are desensitized to such fare these Days. Anyone who has enjoyed amies previous efforts will surely have a rip roaring time with total recall it gets three stars out of four.
