Bears say they re concerned with How they play the game by Rob Gloster Berlin Apas the Chicago bears prepared to play in a record fourth foreign country coach Mike Ditka made it Clear that winning was not nearly As important As the experience. The bears who played a pair of exhibition games in Canada in the Early 1960s and have visited England and Sweden in recent years were battling the san Francisco 49ers in Berlin on saturday night. No other nil team has played in As Many countries As the bears though the 49ers now Are among several teams who have travelled to three foreign countries in the preseason. But the bears and 49ers will be More interested in preserving secrets than in winning because they meet again this year in what could be a crucial game on the final Day of the regular season. A we Hope to play some people look at some people and win the game in that order a Ditka said. A a we la just get the american bowl 91 Ball into the hands of a lot of people on offence and isolate a couple of people on defense and see How they match the bears and 49ers clash for keeps on monday dec. 23, a game that could determine division winners. San Francisco has won five straight pfc Western division titles Chicago has captured six pfc Central division crowns in seven years. A you have a lot of Guys who Are trying to make the Ball club or trying to move up in positions a said 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. A the thing about preseason games is that you see a lot of hard Effort but you done to get the starters playing for the full the bears and 49ers held Light practices on a Rainy Friday then got in a Little last minute sightseeing and souvenir Hunting. But the atmosphere on the teams has been a Little More business like than last year when the los Angeles rams and Kansas City chiefs played the first nil preseason game in Berlin. The change is due As much to Berlin itself As to the nature of the teams. The City was alive with political and cultural change last summer and the rams and chiefs enthusiastically sought pieces of the Berlin Wall and other remnants of a fading East Germany. East Germany now is gone and so is almost All of the Wall. And while economic evolution has replaced political revolution As the main theme in Berlin the City also has some new problems a players were warned to stay away from the Eastern Section of Berlin at night when skinheads and other rowdies often roam the streets. Editor s note because of Early the press Start required to print sunday Magazine the american bowl in Berlin was still in Progress As this edition went to press saturday. A the vote next january on whether to raise academic standards for Mcaa athletes has probably become the a most predictable event in sports. The Council and the presidents commission the most influential groups within the Power Structure of the Mcaa Are both in full support of almost every one of the measures.
