We Are constantly trying to get other countries to allow More Freedom . The soviet Union. I believe we should first allow Freedom in our own country. Your recent article about censorship said it All. The a far right and religious rights Are currently trying to regulate the things we read. The first amendment guarantees our Freedom of the press. We have fought to ensure future generations have this right. Now the conservatives want to make our forefathers suffering for nothing. They claim to be doing what is right but by whose Standard Many of the books they Are trying to get rid of Are considered classics by Many. How to eat Fried Worms was one of my favorite books As a kid. I think most of us have read books by Mark Twain but that May not be for Long. He has been under attack by right wingers for years. There Are rarely books that corrupt children. Nearly All teach the individual and make them use their minds. Mein kampf even teaches us something though perhaps the worst human being Ever put on this planet wrote it. Obviously the conservatives of our great nation emulate this Man As he also destroyed books that were against his beliefs. A spec. Russell l. Franke Kitzinger Germany teachers deserve thanks so often helping others is Given a secondary role in our lives. We perceive or have instilled in us from an Early age that Money is All that matters. We All sometimes afford great inventors politicians entrepreneurs and other gifted people their just rewards or Praise. However in reality we All miss the most important truly marvelous inventive and gifted people. The reality is that a Good schoolteacher has More of an Impact upon history politics invention and business keenness than almost anyone. No one besides a Parent has such a tremendously influential role in the development of a Young mind than a Good schoolteacher. A Good schoolteacher helps students reach the stars in Many ways. Sorry for those of you who believe pm a teacher seeking Praise or accolades. No in a just one Humble Soldier. I have absolutely no monetary Reward coming for making these statements. All my time spent As a dependent and now having 14 years of service and four children of my own i feel confident in saying Dodds teachers Are the very Best. Those in Berlin Are certainly to be included. Teachers everywhere along with soldiers labourers and so Many forgotten people deserve credit for helping create almost All that is Good in our wonderful lives. I really done to have much to give besides the most Humble sincere thank you. You have helped me raise my family marvellously. I sincerely thank All teachers in Europe and especially those in Berlin for the last four years. A sgt. Jimmie Wilder Iii Berlin to War ranted prayer Mav i address the letter a unwanted prayer religious discrimination is the most pervasive form of discrimination in the entire world. As a child in new England i was chided and openly scolded for being lutheran. The lords prayer ends differently in the Catholic version and 1 was caught reciting the trailer phrase when prayer was mandatory. The result was that i was made to sit in the rear of the class and i was never forgiven by my Catholic teacher. Now 1 am in my 40s with 20 years in the military. I am agnostic. 1 think practically and i am extremely offended when i am forced to leave a ceremony when a chaplain gets up to preach the word. I support the writers statement that no Public or government function should begin with any reference to a god a unless homage is paid to the thousands of other religious figures who Are praised throughout the world. I consider this mandatorily mandated official invocation and the like an invasion of my right to believe or not to believe. In a sure that the letter writer and i will both get blasted from the left and right Foi our beliefs a master sgt. Charles s. Hillis Offenbach Germany editor s note a undeserved slap in face the front Page Story featuring Gist racial complaints aug. 26 was a slap in the face of the majority of teachers with the department of defense dependents schools who work very hard to educate children of All races in our military schools. It is regrettable that Arthur Fletcher received so Many complaints about the school system but on what basis can he claim that racial discrimination is a a endemic were each of the complaints substantiated citing an a a instance or a another occasion does not justify the use of the adjective was the Case of Black students being told or was it encouraged to form their own gospel group actually a misguided attempt by someone to promote minority Opportunity if the students had asked to form a gospel group but were told to join the choir would racial discrimination still be claimed in my dealings with Dodds teachers in Asia and Europe i have encountered a healthy prejudice toward stupidity and ignorance but never race. The topic of race never entered into discussions of children except in an attempt to understand family dynamics such As language or cultural differences among korean or turkish or filipino parents. Undoubtedly episodes of racial discrimination do occur and it would be beneficial for All of us to reflect on whether we allow race Creed rank or whatever to influence our decisions about other people. But we should realize that no meaningful dialogue Ever got started by making an opening accusation of a a racism witness current events in Brooklyn. I Hope readers take the time to exam letters to the editor Ine How we treat our fellow human beings Overlook inflammatory journalism such As that article and for our kids Sake support our schools. A Dominic Defrancis in Ciurlik Turkey take care of our own As an american done to you feel Good every month when you get your pay voucher and see the Federal tax taken out does t it make you feel Good that you Are doing your part to feed the kurd pay your senators exuberant salaries and Aid every second rate country that comes begging us for help a All the while our fellow americans Are homeless jobless and hungry on our streets when you watch an do you reach for your Check Book whenever one of those pathetic spots comes on about some child starving Halfway around the world from us do you think an would air a plea for Aid to help american children who Are going to bed hungry of course not that would he bad for morale. Just because its not on an does t mean its not a problem. Are you proud to be an american when your country a policies Are ridiculed by your european hosts the next time an airs another one of those commercials begging for a few dollars to feed a child whose country has forgotten him and you feet a Pang of guilt As you rub your own full stomach think of the american children and families who face the same problems. Then instead of writing a Check write a letter to the policy makers who Are spending your tax Money thousands of Miles from where its needed. The addresses Are in the Post Library its our responsibility to take care of our own. If we done to Start owning up to that soon there will be pictures of hungry americans on japanese and european television asking for Aid. A John p. Van Olden Fulda Germany a some processing lips out processing is a scary process because time is very important. Plan ahead if you have housing a plan to make pre inspection. Make minor repairs. Schedule hold baggage and household goods shipment. Lets not forget customs inspections whether you Are army or air Force. Allow for Down Days or for facilities being closed even if the closure was not publicized. If you done to allow for these situations it can cause you headaches and heartaches. Expect the unexpected. If you Are responsible for providing a service to someone leave your personal attitude at Home and give that person what you want in return.
