The 7-foot slab of Brown Marble honors Lindsey for his actions during a 1944 bombing Mission that earned him the medal of Honor but Cost him his life. The move to Jefferson followed a dispute triggered when Lindsey a widow Evalyn Rhinehart sought to have the Monument moved to storm Lake Iowa where she and Lindsey first met. Lindsey was bom in Jefferson. Ronald Hirst a world War ii Veteran and Amateur historian played a key role in the dispute. Hirst became concerned Over the Fate of the Monument when he Learned that officials planned to close the air station next year a part of the draw Down of . Forces in Europe. Hirst had helped organize the drive to raise funds through the Wiesbaden company Grade officers association to build the memorial which was unveiled in 1987.
