     European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - March 19, 1992, Darmstadt, Hesse                                R How to Moke time Fly a Frankfurt Airport a boy too Smalt to see through the Telescope above him stares toward the grounded planes. Below a Heinkel he 111 bomber rests in peace. By Jim Derheim staff photographer High above the Hustle and Bustle of Rushing travellers and the Roar and smell of Jet engines at the Frankfurt International Airport sit a dozen or so silent veterans of the skies a grounded but not forgotten. On the visitors Terrace atop the b and c concourses Are seven aircraft three military ones dating from the closing Days of world War ii and reaching into the Jet age and four commercial carriers including one a junkers Ju-52 recalling the Early Days of Lufthansa Germany s National Carrier. Just inside the Entrance to the Balcony Are about a Hal dozen other old timers ranging from a red Baron Type Fokker fighter to a biplane. These flying machines Aren t the Only ones those making their Way up to the Terrace will see. Complementing the old fliers Are the modern ones that can be seen coming and going from this eagles Eye Vantage Point. Modern Day jets with brightly coloured Tail logos proclaiming their origins of Egypt Turkey Italy a and even farther Japan Singapore and Australia a fill the runways below. On a recent Day an Aeroflot Airliner from what is now called the Commonwealth of Independent states was pulled up to the terminal the logo on a Field of red still proclaiming the once proud letters a cup the initials of the now grounded Union of soviet socialist republics. Entrance to the outside Terrace costs 7 Marks for adults and 5 Marks for children up to age 16. Children 5 and under get in free and it s these Young ones who seem to get the most enjoyment out of the deck. The Terrace is open daily from 8 . To 6 p.m., with the ticket window closing at 5 30. Visitors however can see the indoor planes for free at any time and also watch a High tech exhibition on the past and the future of the fast growing Airport. So the next time you re at the Frankfurt Airport and looking to kill some time try spending a few moments with these Veteran fliers.
