On june 18, 1940, when Charles de Gaulle issued his Appeal for frenchmen to join him outside occupied France every Able bodied male on lie de Sein some As Young As 14, answered his Call leaving for England. Twenty seven of them later were killed fighting for France. Another 3,000 frenchmen reached the Island and embarked from there for England. De Gaulle presented the Island the medal of liberation in 1946, and when he died in 1970 the entire Island population of nearly 1,000 people went into mourning. On the Mainland just off the Market Square the old buildings Are painted in pleasant shades of Pink White Green red and maritime Blue.
